View Full Version : Need tranny cooler with 4.10 Gears?

I had my 4.10 gears installed Teusday. I am very happy with the performance upgrade. Next to the DR SCT tuner, it is one of the best bang for the buck!
I spoke to a good friend whom I have always trusted his opinion, he is very knowledgable. He says he 'most strongly' recommends installing a tranny cooler now, since the tranny will be working so much harder and getting so much hotter.
The theory sound good. But is this really a 'must do' kinda thing?
I would like to hear some thoughts from you 4.10 guys.
Thanks

Actually, your friend has it backwards...with 4.10 gears you get increased leverage (vs. 3.55s), so the engine and transmission don't need to work as hard to propel the car.
Although a transmission cooler is a good idea in its own right, it has nothing to do with having 4.10s...

What a GREAT site. I had this same question but never remembered to type it in.
4.10s should make the tranny last longer. What about the improved shift pattern (more positive than stock)?
More work for the tranny or less?
Thanks,
-A

Easy shifting (sliding) into gear = more friction (heat).
Firm shifting (positive) into gear = less friction (heat).
The tranny should last longer, IMHO.
Mike.

Add the tranny cooler. If you do the work yourself it should cost much less than $100.00, depending on how much the cooler costs. I installed mine in series with the factory cooler, out from the factory cooler - into the aftermaket cooler - into the trans. Cooler trans fluid = longer trans life. :)

Had mine installed by local Ford crew. Very competent group with a lot of experience with MMs. Not one recommendation for cooler, by guys I trust.:)

The 4.11's cause the internal gears in the transmission to speed faster for a given mph-----this will cause more heat. Whether or not a second cooler would be needed, I don't know. If you're into mods (which you seem to be with changing the rear gears), I would suggest adding a transmission oil temp gauge. Then you would know if your gears and your driving could use a cooler.

The only mod I have done that substantially raised the tranny temps around town was a 3000 T/C.

I know cooler is better, but how hot is too hot for tranny fluid?

Check out this (http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/page5.shtml) link...
In the words of Jerry Wroblewski, 4R70W transmission designer and overall guru, the ideal range for transmission fluid is 160° to 180°(F). For every 20° increase above 170°, the life of the fluid is cut in half.
The factory cooler is more than adequate, even if you have a 3000 stall.
It is not in the radiator everyone, yet we all seem to forget that.

Do you have a tranny temp gauge? If so, what does it run in town? On the highway?
Thanks,

No.
I have a laptop hooked up to the service port.
Rough housing on city streets is the only time the temps have come up over 180, and even then, never exceeeded 195.

Does the 04 MM already come with a trans cooler?
