View Full Version : Convoy To Mviii

With only a month left til MVIII, we in the ARKLATEX area should get some serious planning going--with numerous routes possible from this area, we should be able to meet up somewhere before arriving at MVIII. Last year, we joined up with the West Coast group in KC,--picked up more in STL and more at Terre Haute for a convoy of 9 Marauders into Indy---it was a great adventure. I have tentatively made plans to joinn the same West Coast group in Des Moines , IA---this could be changed to anywhere enroute within a day's drive---14-16 hours--from DFW. I'm waiting for a departure date from NAVCHAP and Teamrope--will PM them and see what's up. Pleasd post if you are going, even if you can't make connections for the convoy---I would like to set up some kind of special marking for our cars---we all had Texas window flags last year. Anyhow, let's get into action so we can all have a good time getting to MVIII :burnout: Maury

B.J. !!! Just got an e-mail from Keith with your tentative schedule---fits perfectly with my original plans--Des Moines is a good day's drive for me and would be no problem--will try to get a traveling partner to DSM if I can--gets lonesome on long trips alone. Keep me posted--can't wait to be smelling Keith's exhaust fumes again ;) See you SOON, Maury

MVIII is a no go for us. The job still hasen't appered for me, and all the money is needed to maintain housing and cars here. Enjoy, and hoist a Guinness for me.

Your going the long way around from the Arklatex if your headed to Des Moines, Iowa. At the price of gas, it's a bit much for me.
If you decide to come east on I-30 from DFW thru Texarkana on to Memphis and up I-55 then I and maybe others from this area could join you.
I hope NW Louisianians(?) are reading this thread.

Recommend that all potential convoy personnel muster in the chat room at a time which will work for everyone.
How about Saturday morning, 0900 Pacific, 1000 Mountain, 1100 Central, 1200 Eastern, 16 July 2005, in the MM Net Chat Room?
We could designate a "Master Route" with a "Window of Opportunity" for folks to meet up or break off.
Those with other routes could break off into side bar chats or set up an alternate chat session.
I will be there with my hard copy atlas and will have "yahoo maps" in a separate window for instant information on mileage, time, etc.
Any takers? I'll be there anyway, and if no one shows up by 0915 Pacific or 1215 Eastern I will presume that there is no interest.

TR & MRS TR, we have done this before so we can work the issues without any problems. Just trying to give folks an option in case they want to put their heads together. Thanks for your support. Will keep you informed by email and PMs.
Will be calling 4th Horseman tonight to arrange his pick up in Salt Lake City. Probably won't go the whole way there on my first day, Friday 12 August 05. Will most probably pick him up during day #2. If tired, will stop somewhere between Vegas and the Utah border rather than push it all the way.
No way I could have driven from San Diego to Salt Lake City today, would have wrecked from lack of sleep. Long hours over the last month or so. -kjs-

I wasn't able to make the chat room last Saturday morning... What, if anything, was decided? I see your group will be coming through Des Moines on the way to MV-III. Do you know about when you're departing from there? I ask because I'd meet you on I-80 in Iowa City if I know when you depart D.M..
The only other item is when you are scheduled for the Hampton Inn @ MV-III. I have reservations arriving Tue 16th. I ask because I wondered if you are driving straight through from Des Moines to Detroit? I'm trying to schedule my departure time and if I can convoy, I'd like to.
Waiting for an update.
Cheers!

During chat tonight, Wednesday 27 July 05, we set up the following timeline.
Navchap departs San Diego Thursday evening 11 Aug 05, stopover somewhere in Nevada.
Navchap arrives in the vicinity of Salt Lake City Friday evening 12 August and picks up 4th Horseman in SLC on Saturday 13 August.
Meanwhile, Teamrope departs the Seattle vicinity. Mrs. Teamrope also. They are slightly north of us until we begin the convoy in
Des Moines Iowa.
We meet in Des Moines on Monday evening 15 August. Depart Tuesday morning, 16 August. Cruzer and Hwy Cruiser plan to join convoy in Des Moines.
Teamropes, Navchap/4th Horseman, Cruzer, and Hwy Cruiser meet Too Many Fords in Iowa City Iowa.
Next rally point, Chicago. Arrive Chicago midday Tuesday 16 August.
Hoping to rally with Sergnt Mac, Steven Gerard, and Slowpoke if possible. Might also meet Mercman. Above listed folks will escort the MV3 convoy through Chicago and will each head different ways afterward.
More info as it becomes available. My cell # is on the Bunny List, or email me, since it is not always easy to get my PMs.
We will be carrying our cell phones and we will try to have FRS in every vehicle to facilitate convoy integrity and safety.
If you don't have a Family Radio, some of us will have an extra, let us know.

I hear I might of left chat a tad too soon last night. I should have mentioned that all of you who are looking to stay in Des Moines can also camp out at Castle TMF the night of the 15th too. I'm about 100 miles NE of Des Moines, but the trip to Chicago is still 65 MPH on Hwy 20 straight east of Cedar Falls to hook up with the Chicago crew.

Too Many Fords has graciously invited a number of the convoy participants to stay over at his place. TMF's house is located about 50 miles north of the I-80 and I-380 interchange in Des Moines IA. Those who wish to rally at TMF's place should send him a PM.
It is my intention to be available for the people who are coming across on I-80. 4th Horseman and I will be rallying with any interested parties in the vicinity of Davenport IA.
Davenport is somewhat east of Des Moines and it is southeast of the home of TMF. We will arrive in Davenport IA on Monday evening 15 August and depart on Tuesday morning 16 August.
From Davenport IA, on Tuesday morning, 16 August, 4th Horseman and I will drive directly to Chicago. We will have a mini-meet with the Windy City Marauders, at mid-day. Location of rally point TBD, Sergeant Mac is the tentative point of contact, subject to issues of availability.
This mini-meet will be at lunch time, and will involve a noon meal. From there the Chicago folks who are interested are going to ride with us in the direction of Detroit.
The participants of this mini-meet do not necessarily have to be attending MV3. All are welcome. Possible we may have some surprise guests from Indy riding with us for part of the way as well.
The folks who are staying at TMF's house may want to go on to Chicago from there, since it would not require them to come south to meet those of us transiting on I-80. They are also more than welcome to join us.
Once we have a rally point in Chicago, the information will be passed along.
Any ideas Mac?

Got the word on this hook-up from Slowpoke and Too Many Fords this past weekend, and I have some ideas.
Grab your maps and GPS and look up the intersection of state route 83 and I-55. There are three hotels within blocks...
A Red Roof Inn (my favorite, and most likely the least expensive)
http://www.redroof.com/reservations/inn_details.asp?innNumber=167
A Holiday Inn Express
http://www.surveymonkey.com/TurnOffPopup.asp?Z=1&A=8926
And, a Fairfield Inn, which is not coming up on a search right now, I'll check again from the office.
The jurisdiction for all three is Willowbrook, IL. 60527, a very pleasant host.
There is a very nice restaurant nearby, White Fence Farm
http://www.whitefencefarm.com/chicago/index.htm
White Fence Farm is not where we hold our Chicken Runs, but that is nearby too, with some genuine old Route 66 pavement for those who want to leave a mark on history.
All of this is easy to get to for the Windy City crew, with plenty of advance notice. I'm hoping for a maximum turnout.
More later, this is just an opening suggestion.

Mac, we weren't actually planning to go all the way into Chicago on Monday night 15 August, since we want to try to get a convoy group assembled in Iowa for the ride into Chicago.
For any of the convoy folks who want to go on ahead to Chicago, we will certainly meet them there, around mid-day Tuesday 16 August 05.
Going to look over the options that you have offered as potential rally points, and agree that the SR83/I-55 interchange would be a good spot.
Would you recommend a best route from I-80 in Davenport Iowa to the 83/55 interchange?
Thanks, -kjs-

Since you are now stopping East of me, let me know your approximate "Leave Time" to head up to Chicago so I can be down at your No-Tell Motel when you're ready to head up there. I'll convoy from Davenport the morning of the 16th with your group.

We can come through on the I-80 or the I-88, or another route. Whatever works best for the Chicago contingent. Let us know what you think.
Have not done a hotel search for military discounts, special rates, etc. for Davenport yet, but will make that info available once a decision is made.

4th Horseman and I will be at Baymont Inn at the I-80 and US 61 interchange. It is on a frontage road that looks out at both the 80 & 61.
Two beds for 58.00 from hotels.com, but it's 66.00 "military discount rate" from baymontinns.com, so save the 8 bucks M/M Teamrope!
Too Many Fords and Hwy Cruiser will meet us there at 0900/9AM on Tuesday for the trip to a point in Chicago that Sergeant Mac chooses.

The best I can do here, Keith, is repeat my earlier suggestion. This location is not inside the city, it's about 25 miles west of downtown Chicago. Nonetheless, I've done a lot of OTR driving to meets, and I think I have a feel for how y'all will want to relax overnight, and this is my best suggestion. The food will be delicious, and the accommodations are your choice. I'll anticipate your arrival in mid afternoon, and I hope to rally as many Windy City folks as possible to show y'all a good time as you pass through. Let me know?

Y'all will have to decide if you want to lay over here Tuesday, the 16th. When you leave out Wednesday AM, you're about 5 hours from your target, depending on construction zones. Zack and I have made the drive from the IL/IN state line to Detroit in 4 hours, but we left before dawn, and the longer your convoy, the slower (hehehe, don't see this word posted here often) you will travel.
Sorry to say there is a lot of construction ahead of you, and I don't have any suggestions on how to get around that. However, IMHO, if it were me, I'd back track to I-80, and go around the city, the construction zone on I-80 at this time, is at the state line and cannot be avoided, But, other zones on I-294, as well as the morning rush hour drive can.

No problem Team. Beware of what you ask for, I may just take you up on that.
haha!
Now, as to the meet point in Davenport, after careful consideration, I think my plan is to now meet your convoy over in Chicago. I like driving as much as the next guy but I would rather break this into two 5-hour drives rather than one long 10 hour drive.
With that said, I'm going to book a room at the place that Mac suggested above and camp out there the night of the 15th. Then I'll just wait to meet up with your crew when you get to Chicago the next morning. This also means you guys don't have to wait till 9am to get on the road too.
JD, let me know what you want to do with the change of plans I have made. You're still welcome to come up here early and follow me if you like. Or you can do as I am and meet me and the Windy [he said windy!] Crew the night of the the 15th and lay some rubber on 'ol route 66 that night! Checking the map and trusty Streets & Trips, that would take you about 7.5 hours to meet me in Chicago the night of the 15th. It would cut 100 miles from your trip and you could use the extra money to camp out at the Red Roof Inn.
So, as usual, the plan is more like silly putty and we're molding it as we go!

John, stay tuned for a change of plans...
Y'all...I got a telephone call from Keith yesterday, as well as an e-mail. He's not expecting to lay over for a night in ChicagoLand, but shoot straight through Illinois, and on to MV-III. Time/Distance-wise, quite possible. Keith was looking for a rest area, and some lunch with some local owners. Not a problem.
Reset your leave times and redirect your maps/GPS to I-80 and US. Route 14/45, aka locally as LaGrange Road. It's a major interchange, and the last real nice place to rest befor the IL/IN state line just 18 miles down the road.
So, cancel the dinner at WWF, and staying overnight in Willowbrook, we'll make you comfortable for a few hours, and you're on your way. Any questions, feel free to call?
Anyone wanting to hook up with this convoy, stay tuned here?

I am unable to attend MV-III due to work and lack of funds in the first place. So I hope you all have a great time and I look forward to viewing hundreds of pictures from this event in everyone's gallery.

I believe JD and myself will still be staying the night of the 15th at the Red Roof Inn and hook up with y'all for dinner and a burnout! We can relax that night and meet Keith and crew down on I-80/45 the next day when they stop for lunch.
I see there is a [Chinese/Korean/Japanese/Asian] restaurant called the Rising Sun just south of that interchange. If nothing else, a good meet place for all when we hook up the 16th.
So, let's put on our party hats and get ready!

John - sorry to hear that you won't be making it to Detroit. I hope you get things squared away soon.
As far as my plans to the rest of the convoy, I guess I'm up in the air until Cruzer firms up his plans. If nothing else, I'll hook up with the group on I-80 in DesMoines and follow the leader... I just gotta keep NavChap in front of me. ;)

Back y'all, thanks for the emails and the voice mails while we were working. The plan is in good shape, just a couple of variables.
Sorry to have lost TMF, maybe we'll catch up with you down the road sometime.
Cruzer, do you know if you can join us yet?
Sergeant Mac, do you have a preference for the restaurant or truck stop where we should rally? I have no idea what's at the I 80 and US 45 near Joliet.
Subject rally to take place at 1130-1200/11:30AM - 12 noon until 1330-1400/1:30-2pm timeframe.
Does anybody else want to meet up with us on the way to or from MV3?
Lots of nice invitations from many of you who are making a lot of effort to connect with us. Thanks, y'all know who you are.
Let's keep the lines of communication open. Regards, -kjs-

It's your typical tourist interchange, with truck stops, all the popular fuel choices, car washes, and so on. There is a half dozen locations for us, all within 5 minutes of I-80 exit/entrance ramps.
I will meet you on the exit ramp, your right shoulder before the light. Once we rally together, we'll move on from there.
What ever y'all will need, or, want by this time, it's available here.
Keith, you have my cell phone number for last minute alignments.

Things got confused in a hurry this week---last week, her personal doc changed Ginny's B/P meds--her B/P tanked--dizzy spells --followed by headaches( she never had headaches before)--took blood work today and can't get an appointment with her cardiologist until Fri, the 12th. After talking to Dr. Osborne on the phone, we are fairly confident Ginny will be O K--but they need 48 hours after exam to know for sure---this is not a life threatening thing, just a matter of regulating B/P-- even without meds, her B/P is not dangerously high--they are just trying to fine tune it. I will not leave her for a week if she is having dizzy spells---she will be alone and doesn't drive--3 daughters within 20 minutes of the house--they will look after her while I'm gone---it's entirely my descicion----soooo, you folks make your plans, I'll let you know as soon as I make a decision---I may delay a day and would miss you, but that would still put me in MV by Wednesday evening--I will make every effort to make it--but for now , keep me informed and I'll give you the best info I can--maybe I can depart later and join up enroute. Ginny's well-being is primary--we'll just have to sweat it out. Thanks for including me in your plans---hopefully, I'll see you at MVIII. Maury

Maury: Monday 15 August starts in Lincoln NE for 4th Horseman and me.
In the meantime M/M Teamrope and at least one additional passenger will be making their way slightly to the North of Des Moines.
M/M Teamrope +1 will drop down into Davenport IA where we will all be staying at Baymont Inn at the I-80 and US 61 South interchange.
It's supposed to be real easy to find, but the building itself is tucked into a dog leg off the Highway.
We are going to play it by ear on the 15th as to rallying on the 80, or just meeting in Davenport.
Please call 4th and me during the 15th, prefer around 0830-0900, so that we can pull over somewhere in Des Moines at a truck stop or whatever and be waiting for you. There is still a good trek to Davenport from Des Moines.
All the best to you and the love of your life. My continued prayers, -kjs-

Ladies and Gentlemen: Will not be able to attend chat tomorrow evening due to a cruise night in the El Cajon section of San Diego, and I will be heading towards Las Vegas Thursday afternoon.
This means that as of now, the best method to reach me will be voice mail. If you are not on Bunny's List, please get into with someone who has my number if you need to call me.
Please do not post my number in the open threads, since it is also my duty phone.
Yes I pay my own phone bill, that's why I can have the 50 state service and all the other features.
When it is possible to plug in my computer I will, and when it is not, I'll try to find a FedEx Kinkos, etc. so I can check the site.
Please do not send me emails to the mm net link, they will go to the ship and will be unretrieved until I return to work.
There are a few folks who know my personal email address, and it's fine with me if they pass it, but again, prefer not on an open thread.
Since we are going to use channel 5 on our FRS units for the Chicago rally anyway, recommend that we use channel 5 for our "hailing frequency" or passing info to the big group.
Suggest that folks who need to go sidebar on the FRS do so on another channel and leave 5 open for the "all hands" type issues.
I am not opposed to answering my phone at any time of the day or night, since I am essentially on 24 hr call from the ship anyway.
If there is a safety issue or a quality of life issue that needs to be addressed, or other urgent items, would prefer that you pass those items along to me in ample time to be addressed, like traffic tie ups, head calls, out of gas, flats, etc.
It was a great time last year and can tell you that if we work together like last year, it will be a great experience worth retelling and reliving.
We try to work towards a 90% solution out there, but sometimes the dissenting opinion is the correct one, so speak up, especially when we are out there on the road.
Thanks, see you on the way to MV3! -kjs-

Poke: Totally open to the option. It sounded great in last week's chat. A few questions, in no way intended to be foolish or aggravating. Just trying to get some more info.
How do we get there?
How will it be traffic wise at 2PM? Will it dump us into difficulty when we get off the route at whatever time we finish it?
Will it cause us that critical delay time, like Svashtar, TorinoDan and I experienced the Friday before last, when we talked for literally five minutes too long...and the result was hitting the weekend delays northbound on I-5, costing us an hour and a half?
If someone needs gasoline, or a head call (bathroom break) are those facilities available?
I like the idea and recommend that the convoy consider this. Any feedback anyone? -kjs-

I'd say stay away from Lake Shore Drive at 2pm especially if you're going to be in Joliet, my guess is it will add at least an hour to your time... But if you do, heck it's closer for me to meet you guys there, instead of Joliet.... Don't tempt me to open the bar for you guys.... so you can use the facilities, grab some pop, ice for your coolers, get food.. It's only 10 min from Lake Shore Drive.... then you can stop by my house, that's about 25 minutes from the bar.... then Slowpoke can take you to IKEA.... then get pancakes..... then might as well go get some chicken...... of course we'll have to get bacon cheeseburgers too.... and finally talk about which S/C is best..... and the control arm length...... and jeweled grills.........

Here's the latest. 4th Horseman picked me up from the Ford Dealer just south of Salt Lake City where it will be overnight.
I lost my electric radiator cooling fan literally one exit before a Ford Dealer. They flushed my system and we traced everything.
It was 4 o'clock on a Friday afternoon, and these folks started to work on my car immediately.
My electric water pump is doing great, no hose problems, but the system was "burping coolant" after the fan quit.
They were able to find me one at a parts distributor in SLC. Amazing! It is actually the electric radiator cooling fan that was in the 2001 SVT Cobras.
I will get a ride from 4th Horseman to the place, and then we will ride down to the Ford Dealer. They will have a tech waiting to put it in for me, amazing.
I should be back on the road by noon tomorrow, less than 24 hours in the "dead line."
If my MM is not ready or something foolish happens, then 4th Horseman is ready to "pony up" his MM up for the trip to MV3.
What a pal, what a gentleman, what a hero, no joke. This would have delayed me at least until Monday if 4th wasn't able to help me make the parts run. They don't have a Saturday parts driver. They had no loaners left.
All convoy operating procedures remain in effect. Regards, -kjs-

Teamrope and Mrs Teamrope, Hwy Cruiser, and 4th Horseman and I arrived in Davenport Iowa this evening.
After 4th and I rallied with JABird56, we all went to another rally point where we picked up Teamrope and Mrs.
Then J went about his business and we met Hwy Cruiser in a town called Prarie, kind of ironic.
We had a nice trip to Davenport, just like old times. We will be on the road again tomorrow at about 0800 and should be in Mokena by noon. Could be earlier but no way to gauge progress.
Got a nice voice mail from Cruzer and he and RVT04 are doing fine. Looking forward to seeing him in Mokena at mid-day, he and R are already there.

Yes, another great mini-Marauderville. Nice to see some of you again, better to meet you for the first time.
Just checked in on the convoy, Indiana Toll Road at MP 101. They got through the I-80 construction slowly, but it's behind them now. They will be sleeping in Marauderville tonight.
Best wishes for a safe journey y'all.

I will see what I can do ;)
The hotel does not have a bar but there is a Bennigans (sp) just up the road. I think they have a bar but I have not checked yet. There are a couple other hotels close by too. I will continue looking for bars within walking distance of the hotel, not sure that I can find any within crawling distance however.
