This is a discussion by "Valentine one" regarding the impossiblility of accurate speed readings with POP radar. Might make a big $ difference in the court room and with your insurance co. should be one of the victims. There may be revenue enhancement operators about...

This may be old news...but I am new and ignorant beyond belief. Dennis:burnout:

You would be amazed at how much guesswork goes into MANY speeding tickets.

It ain't about safety. It's all about revenue.

In theory it's not about safety, but revenue, yes. I believe in this wholeheartidily, and I am a firm believer that people will drive at the speed their most comfortable at - and this speed is the safe speed for everyone. (Without opening a can of worms)...

But did you ever wonder what would happen if they just got rid of the speed limit?

1. There are ALWAYS stupid people on the road (that's rule #1 to life: People are stupid). So you're going to have people abusing the no speed limit (ricers, ehem)

2. What controls a spontaneous 'drag' race from a light from getting out of control and turning an everyday street in Milan?

Unfortunately, the stupid people ruin it for us all. :( Stupid does kill, but not enough to really help... ;)

Have you ever seen the destruction caused by an inexperianced driver? I have, and it is not pretty:( .

Personally, I would like to see a speed limits that reflects the operators training and experiance.

"Pop" radar is acurate and here is why. If it is inacurate, the officer would remove it from service. You see, during training, police are trained to estimate a moving vehicles speed. An instructor uses a LASER and checks the ACTUAL speed. You have to be within a certian speed (5 mph or 5%, I dont remember...) to pass and obtain the certification.

I dont know why I am getting involved in another one of these boo-hoo radar sucks threads. I think this will be the last.

OK, suit is on & I am ready :hide:. :flamer: Fire away.

Yeah, I can estimate speed too.

But that's just it. It's an estimate.

Search around - you'll find tons of stuff that explains how radars work and how they are used/misused.

Like Defyant, I'm not anxious to get into this discussion either, we have had them before, and in the past, it has ended up with someone taking on the police officers who frequent this board. Let's see if we can grow up a bit?

Keep in mind that the article linked to, is from the manufacturer of the radar detector. Free of bias? Hardly. Take that article with a grain of salt, it's more hype than fact.

Whether this MPH operator's manual caution will overturn court cases or not, remains to be seen. But, it serves to underscore a base principle of speed enforcement. The officer is a trained observer, who can estimate vehicle speed from many angles, and rather accurately too. The radar/laser/Vascar, what ever, is simply the scientific tool that confirms the officer's observations to the court, exactly like the Breathalyser tool confirms intoxication in DUI cases. The officer's testimony is 90 percent of the case, the tool is the last confirming 10. Speeders are convicted without radar testimony every day.

POP radar is the sniper in the trees. Once the officer has you in his sights and pulls the trigger, the radar bullet meet it's target long before the target knows a shot has been fired. POP radar allows the officer greater flexibility in cover and concealment, which is in his favor as a safety issue alone. It's much safer to lay in the weeds away from the pavement, than it is to sit on the shoulder against oncoming high speed traffic.

My guess is that Valentine 1 can't meet this challenge, and as we all know, the best defense, is an offense. When you can't beat a challenger in a toe to toe contest, attack credibility, make like Robby the Robot..."Warning, warning, danger, danger"!

Indeed. Elected officials do it every election year.

Smart drivers don't need detectors, they learn to read the road just like the cops do.
