For the time being I'd like to keep my stock headunit. The first thing I'm going to replace is the sub, I really can't stand it. It seems to distort too easily and doesn't put out enough power. I'm not looking for earth shaking bass, I'd just like to improve the stock system. So I'm thinking I'd like to replace the factory sub with an Infinity Basslink. So what I'm asking is can I use the same wiring that the factory sub uses? That way the Basslink will still utilize the factory "SUB I" channel. Also, the Basslink has speaker level inputs and pre-amp inputs. Which ones would it use? I'm assuming the factory wiring for "SUB I" would be preamp wiring since the factory sub uses it's own amp. Anyone know for sure?
In all honesty, I know if I wanted the ultimate sound I'd have to replace the factory headunit, but I really don't think I want to do that. After market systems seem to ruin the appearance of the interior and I really don't want to make the steering wheel radio buttons useless.
On a side note, is it possible to cut the speaker openings for the rear speakers to fit 6x9's?

Jason,
I put an Infinity Basslink in my Marauder. I absoultly love it. I have two Basslinks in my Cobra and they sound great.
All you have to do is take off the 4 nuts the hold the Stock sub in place. Then there u go, u can install it.
I used a High to Low level imputs for my install. I have the gain controller mounted in the front of the car. Its easy enought to fine tune from there.
I would recommend putting some new speakers in. I would suggest the Infinity Kappa series 5x7 with directional tweeters. The sound difference in the car is amazaing. I replaced all of my speakers with the Infinity and I'm very pleased. I agree with you on the fact of not wanting to ruin the look of the car with an aftermarket deck.
Anyway, I guess that is my two cents worth. let me know if you have any questions.

So I can use the same wiring that the stock subwoofer uses? Also I'm a moron when it comes to wiring car stereos.... Is this something that even I can do? Or should I have it installed by a proffessional?
As for the speakers, I previously had an '03 and I only upgraded the factory speakers (Alpine Type-R). They were really nice speakers and made a huge difference. On this one though it seems that the sub is in more need of being replaced then the speakers; so first I'm going to do the sub. I don't know what it is, I'm wondering if Ford made some changes to the tuning of the '04 sound system. It doesn't sound nearly as good my '03 (at least not as far as the sub is concerned). I haven't checked to see if the foam had been removed though. It also seems to rattle quite a bit. Maybe the sub is defective, but I'm not really concerned about having it replaced with another OEM sub.
Later on, I'm gonna install JBL speakers. I'm wondering if I can cut and enlarge the rear openings to accomodate 6x9's. I also considered the Infinity Kappa's.

cobraden,
You still had to run power straight to the battery didn’t you? Or, did you use the power and ground off the factory amp? That would make it much easier but I am not 100% sure that would work. I pulled my basslink out of my mustang before I sold it. It’s the pre remote gain unit. Do you find the remote gain pretty useful?
