    Fuel Filter

My 03 MM sometimes smells of gas particularly on the left side of the car. Weird enough i really only smell gas when the fuel is low. Also seems a lil hesitant at low rpm's. Could this issue be related to the fuel filter? I've changed plugs and coils and O2 sensors and still hesitant.

clean the throttle body and Idle air control, one at a time , so you can better tell which one worked (if that concerns you)

check the evap hoses under the car, which are under the gas tank. the gas vent over time gets clogged withdebris, even spider webs for some odd reason.

the black box under fuel tank and the hoses to it in this pic

If it was the fuel filter it would smell all the time.

If your going to replace the fuel filter, use a Motorcraft – FG800A (larger than stock, bend bracket and use hose clamp to secure it to bracket)

You might also want to get fuel filter clips as the existing ones will break and the new ones included with the filer are rarely correct. Get NAPA - FILNCK11 – qty. 10 fuel filter clips.

A step up would be a fuel filter from Kinsler, mines about the size of a pepsi can (TWSS) and braided stainess lines to connect it.

You have to file down the ends of the stock lines to make compression fittings fit correctly. I cut factory lines to remove some bends. drill and tap the frame for the new brackets, you may be able to use existing bolt holes.

    Good point Bob!

Could be the gas tank to filler neck grommet.
