Bought junkyard engine, this is what I found when I opened it up

Bought a verfied 2005 Lincoln aviator engine with supposedly 104k on it. When I cracked it open this is what I found: https://youtu.be/Xbo29Y_MAzk

Timing chain loose as a goose. Also the engine looks like the oil was not changed regularly.

Yhis is my first Ford DOHC engine. What parts should I aim to replace, and how can I clean it besides taking it to a machine shop? Brake clean does nothing.

I'm assuming at this point I will need an oil pump, and full timing set? Going for a new cam cover gasket set as well. At least I got a decent deal on the motor with no core charge...

So imagine this. You "clean" it up the best you can without tearing it down completely. You dress it, install it, connect it all up and fire it up for the first time. It either smokes or knocks or is otherwise screwed up. Now you have to unconnected it, uninstall it, undress it and tear it down the right way like you should have done in the first place. Ask me how I know. it's already in the garage on a stand and partially dissembled. At the very least strip it and send the block and pistons out to be cleaned and checked. If the measurements are good you might be able to just hone it and do rings and bearings. If it looks like crap inside you have to man. You will thank me later.

Doesn't your original engine just have a tick, or slight knock?

    Is it getting worse?

Is it possible the tick is just a lifter tappet?

Can you ask the junk yard for a different engine?

Chains will get slack like that if the engine was rotated counterclockwise. (For torque converter bolt removal) spin it clockwise and the slack disappears

Yeah that is on the table. Right now I am going to be doing a leakdown on this engine and go from there.

I will be calling the junkyard but they only had the one 2005 motor. My engine isn't getting worse, but it's pretty damn annoying and it is burning oil. I hear the tick the worst on the exhaust port(s) of #8

To go along with that thought......if there was that much slack while the motor was running, wouldn't the guides/arms also be trashed? They don't look to be eaten through...hell, my car at 101k had worse guides than what I could see in that video.

Who sells an inexpensive engine rebuild kit for this motor? Which timing set should I go with? Any measurable differences between the Ford set and the cloyes kit? The for kit is almost $200 more

Looks like it's easier just to buy the Ford kit vs piecing it together like that.

    Anyone use the cloyes set?

There is no such thing. Working on mod motors is like big block Fords. Everything is expensive.
