Ford says one hour of idling time equals 33 miles of driving.

I wouldn't worry about idle hours unless they are over 10,000. A Cvpi was made to idle. The 33 to 1 rule is for oil changes, idling doesn't add much wear to an engine like the sohc 4.6. Look at the condition of the car and let that show you how it was treated.

Average idle hours is around 5,000. Highest I've seen was a Cvpi on The Facebook that had 14,000 idle hours. It still looked decent and the odometer was over 200k on the original motor.

good info. thanks guys.
Hours are hours, as miles are miles. Till you have to service one of these turds with 15k+ idle hours and close to 200k on the clock, your fooling yourself by going by outside appearance. I know, I owned a 06' with 178k and 17,332 idle hours, it needed a motor.....bad. The department had done everything else prior to its retirement. It was just wore out, plain and simple.
I do have a 60k mile car in the fleet with almost 15k idle hours, the pistons feel like they're swapping holes, it is a gigantic POS. So in short, shut the car off, it'll last a lot longer. Hell, I'm driving a 04' I bought off Govdeals, spent its life at our crime lab with one driver, it never sat and idled, 85k on it and it runs like new. The variable is it didn't sit and idle.

If the cluster got replaced and not ordered correctly, that would be one reason. It is not able to be activated with IDS, I haven't looked at one with FORscan yet.

My 2010 has a little over 7400 hrs and just turned 125k today. Paint is rough, retired sheriff's car. Being black doesn't help. Certain angles you can still see the decal outlines. Interior is almost perfect though. Runs great, gets 21-22 mpg highway with 3.55s. I think I gave $4k for mine. Retired duty cars are a crap shoot sometimes, their intended purpose was to get abused.

Also sometimes the wiring can be hacked up, a lot of that depends on who decommissioned the car. Wires get tucked away, so just look the car over good. Appearances can be deceiving, that goes for any used vehicle.

I just bought a 03 tahoe ex squad car. Runs and drives great 153k on it and the hour meter says 14,000 hours. I dident see that till after I bought it. It does not smoke so I'm going to roll with it.
