    Exclamation Name that noise!

33 second video of my buddy putting the car in and out of drive/reverse.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD_TvcBKZmI

Okay so I've had this issue for a while now and It's been getting progressively worse in terms of how loud and how much it can be felt in the car.

Going into reverse is significantly louder. (Distinction can be heard in the video.)

I also started hearing an occasional metal on metal sound that I would describe as a "slap". It only seems to occur in second and third gear after acceleration followed by letting off the pedal completely.

Despite the noise, the transmission seems to be unaffected. Still shifts on time every time, no shudder, and very firm.

Just did the U-Joints to rule out that possibility and it made no difference. Spider gears also done recently but the noise began long before that.

I have a J-mod with the 1-2 springs removed and the most aggressive form of the Z-tune.

I have a number of ideas on what it could be but what do you guys think is the most probable cause?

Something is way out of whack in the diff.

Way too much R&P lash followed with a clunk.

Would not drive till inspected - try & prevent big $$$ repair.

Excellent Advice. Don't drive it this way. Shouldn't have that much slack. It should be obvious when you look inside the differential,

What is the most cost effective option? Am I better off just buying a complete differential?

    Something like this?

    http://www.4wheelparts.com/Drivetrai...FWho7AodjFMAOQ

Or just tear into it and isolate the damaged parts?

I do all my own work so labor time is no consequence.

I would say the backlash is off due to the crush sleeve over compressing, but you would feel it when driving at a constant speed.

I'm still thinking about the spider gears. You said you just replaced them, but where did you get them? 28 spline spider gears are no longer available from Ford.

My advice would be to pull the diff cover and see what's going on.

if you are in need of a whole diff, American Muscle has them cheap if you want to stay 28 spline.

I took them out of a GMQ from the same generation as our MM's. They were in immaculate condition. (See thread I posted earlier). Like I mentioned before this issue was happening before and after the spider gear swap. Nothing changed.

Does anyone have a good exploded diagram type picture of our differential and carrier housing? I thought for sure Google images would turn up some good results but I'm not having any luck.

If you are going to replace the carrier then upgrade to 31 the carriers are much cheaper

Cool. Just submit $10 to my paypal.

BTW the last one is a 9.75 rear but besides physical size, no real difference I can see besides the thin ring near the ring gear.
