    Ignition Key broke

Does anyone know where the chip is in the ignition key?
First the hoop on the fob broke, now my ignition key hoop is broke.
In case I can't get the piece that broke to stick with adhesive, I was thinking of drilling a hole in the key.

    That's a good question...

FYI, replacement keys aren't that expensive and as long as you have 2 working keys now, you can program the replacement yourself.

Ok, so what happens if you only have one key? I only ask because my fiance and I were just talking about getting another key.

I bought key on eBay took it ace hardware and cut the key. A friend at my dealer programed 2nd key free. He used a laptop computer from the dealer to program it. 10 minutes or less. If you have two key procedure for program of key is in the owners manual and online. Key is $12, remote is 10 dollars on eBay. $2 plus to cut key. Certain locksmiths will also do the same for a greater fee.

Locksmith with the appropriate programming equipment or a Ford IDS to program it.

I do, and i know how to program a key with two working keys.
I will get a blank and keep the broken one as a spare.
If fixing the key fails, I wanted to have a hole to hang some kind of ring on it.
The older PATS keys had a little square visible on the edge so you could see the chip.

I had the same thing happen to me. Here's what I did.

Shaped and formed it like play dough and sanded it. I was thinking of painting it.

That is the boat I'm in. One lousy key that the top is broken. I did buy another key, but I keep forgetting about it when I go to Ford for my oil changes.

Hopefully the Ford dealer doesn't overcharge for this kind of thing, lol.

Take apart the plastic upper and lower garnish on the steering column. Remove the ignition cylinder to access the PATS antenna ring. Remove the ring and relocate it under the dash and attach (zip tie) the broken key to it. Now enjoy the ability to use OE or hardware store keys to start your car. No need to program them because the PATS system will always see a key present. I did this with my Clifford alarm/remote start. Both my ignition keys are OE cuts with no programming PLUS it's gonna be cheaper if you ever lose your keys and need a locksmith. This defeats your OE antitheft system but my car is always garaged and if you can drive it away with 9 bullets in you, it's yours.
