I don't speed up for those but there is a story about a similar thing.

When the corner watering hole installed a breathalyzer to help ensure our safe return home, became a competition to get the high score. The law of unintended consequences.

Rest area, rest home -- what difference does it make? I'm sure Grandma enjoyed seeing all those big trucks pulling in and out.

I use them to see how accurate my speedo is.

I usually just let off a little. Im afraid they are going to start making those things with cameras in them and then mail you a ticket.

They're used to establish the 85th percentile's on major roads. In turn drives speed limits and the 85th percentiles are sometimes used as evidence in court both for and against you.

I once had a ticket dismissed because I got a ticket for 54 in a 45, I asked the county for the 85th percentile on that stretch of road, turned out it was 50mph, Judge determined that 54mph was not an unreasonable speed and didn't warrant the ticket.

I got lucky... Anyway... Moral of the story, I friggin punch it every time I see one of those suckers...

Thats cool I never had any idea thats why they were there. Its nice to see something like that actually work for you in your case.

Usually when I go by one its at the flow of traffic and its blinking cause im over by about 5mph. As soon as I see it I get that sudden rush of adrenaline and curiosity that makes me want to see how high it can go.
But right before I act on this sudden urge I remember that some do have camera's and they can mail you tickets.

Ayah ones in Maine will. At least one in Bangor and one outside Portland both did. The Trooper in Saco on the Maine Turnpike said he thought 85 was excessive. I think he choked as he was out of his car facing traffic in the middle of the slow lane with his radar unit pressed to his face when the guy in front of me pulled out to go around him and slammed on his brakes when he saw it was a speed trap. Left me no where to go. I stopped about 3 feet from the trooper dead center on the hood ornament. Long streaks of rubber in the road behind me. He was so busy getting me clocked that he didn't realize he almost died until it was over. He said he should give me a ticket but he didn't want to explain how it happened if I took it to court.
