The factory shop manual method for automatic equipped vehicles:

Jack up the rear of car and properly support it with both rear wheels off the ground and the vehicle in park.

Remove one wheel and bolt the special tool on in place of the wheel.

Connect beam type torque wrench to tool. Apply force to torque wrench while watching the scale. The wheel should not turn until you exceed 135 lb ft (if I remember correctly)

The method if you don't have the factory tool. Use the proper socket on one of the lug nuts and be sure to turn in a clock wise direction. If the wheel spins before you reach the spec for the lug nut torque it is worn. This method is not as accurate since the lug nut is not in the exact center of the axle which will make the reading show slightly lower. You should stop when you reach the spec for the lug nut torque so you can't test and see if it is truly, fully in spec.

If the vehicle is a manual the process is slightly different since you cant leave it in park. In those cases you leave the trans in neutral and one of the wheels on the ground. Since you can't use the parking brake the vehicle must be securely block to prevent it from rolling when you do reach the break away torque.

Or you can just admit that there are far more than 50K miles on the diff clutches and rebuild. That is the weakness of a clutched differential - wear. They have a nice seat-of-the-pants feel, though.

We checked my OEM Trac-Loc this way at 177K miles when we replaced the pinion bearing.......150 ft lbs as I recall!!

Still does the "Two Stripe" after 11 years and 262K miles!!

I did a burnout last night in a valet section after a wedding and it was apparent my drivers might have spun faster than my passenger wheel, but then again everyone was tanked except me.

Another test should be done, but I think things are fine other than needing tires.

    Ok then.
But what if it's a DTR, how in the world do you do a burnout in one of those?

pull the front bumper up against a building wall. Poor bottles of water / bleach under the rear tires. Have 2 friends lift the rear bumper to release some tire traction.
Put the car in low and press the gas to the floor.
    That might work

For a DTR burnout, jack up the back of the car, pin the throttle and get someone to drop the jack for you.

DTR might be able to do a burnout on ice. Get some ice blocks and place under rear tires and hope for best. If it doesn't work then make margaritas
