    Little BIG problem....

Well I am the proud owner of twins!! I own a 2004 DTR Mercury Marauder that was brought back to life by a good friend of mine and myself.. well just recently I acquired a 2004 DTR crown victoria LX SPORT.. now I bought this car a little under 2 weeks ago and been running GREAT!! UP UNTIL TODAY.. so out of nowhere when I shift into 4th it feels as if I'm shifting into neutral.. 4th gear doesn't catch at all... but only in OD. When I turn the OD off I shift through the gears fine it seems.. and mind you there has been absolutly no slippage in the tranny at all.. im boggled.. any help and insight would be much appreciated...

    Nice cars!
When I had my last Crown Victoria the same thing happened. It turned out to be the overdrive band in the tranny so it needed to be pulled out taken apart and replaced. At first I thought it was no biggie and just drove the car with overdrive off. that was until the problem expanded to the other gears.
When it was apart I was very surprised just how small and cheap feeling the overdrive band actually is in these cars.
    Good luck!!

Well unfortunately in my case the transmission needed to be pulled and opened up just to see how bad things really are. In my case the overdrive band was burnt right up and in pieces plus I noticed lots of wear in the rest of the transmission since I neglected the problem so long. So I opted to do a complete rebuild since the tranny was already pulled from the car. Honestly the heat damage inside the tranny once taken apart was crazy. Discoloured steel warped parts and the fluid smelled absolutely terrible.

In hindsight I wish I had it serviced as soon as the overdrive band gave out but I was young and dumb. Could've saved a lot of money had I done so.

I've noticed it to be a pretty common problem with the tranny on these cars. Same happened on my '04 P71 then again on my '10 P7B.

I now keep a built up j-modded spare transmission in the garage just in case.. lol

    Your confusing me.

You say no 4th at all in OD (which OD IS 4th)

Then you turn off OD and everything is fine? You mean because you are holding 3rd at that point?

I suggest buying a used trans from a 04 up, if you go this route, ask here if the trans is longer like our marauders, or is it shorter like the other crown Victoria's

Check the paint code on the drivers door, I think the cv sport is a different color than DTR..... funny is a buddy of mine has a low mile DTR and a burgundy cv sport.
I mistakenly called his cv sport DTR one day and was corrected with a different paint code. Learn something new everyday

early year cv like 98 to 02 or 03 were toreador red. I think 04 is when Dark toreador red started for cv too.

Yeah your probably right. Would suck to buy the wrong paint and then find out it's the wrong color once you go to bolt on a painted mirror or spoiler

Maybe my buddies cv sport is a 03...

its common for the OD servo piston snap ring to break and get caught in the OD servo regulator valve. Before you rebuild the transmisison, pull the valve body and inspect the OD servo snap ring, Even if the snap ring is not broken, inspect the OD servo regulator valve in the valve body for debris jamming the valve.

like 88grandmarq said, this is very common. In fact, Im wiling to bet you MY MARAUDER your valve body is stuck. Pull the valve body, look at that snap ring, I can almost guarantee a piece will be broke off. then check the valve body. see my thread: "Lost 4th gear? you're gonna want to see this."

Hey Chris the DTR looks great and appears to be legal and on the road. I am looking forward to seeing it all done. It was a privilege to help you achieve ownership. I could not have found a more appreciative owner! Cheers!

This will be a longshot, when my 2006 Taurus had O/D issues I did a fluid flush and change and that was FIVE years ago and 40,000 miles. Apparently Mercon V fluid has a friction modifier that breaks down and affects the torque convertor. My gamble was $110 out of pocket for a big maybe. It paid off huge!

It will cost him $20 in gaskets+fluid to fix his stuck valve. Much better than a new trans or rehaul! He will need to fill it with new fluid afterwards anyways
