Thread: Trans DIED! Good performance 4R70W?

    Trans DIED! Good performance 4R70W?

First thing first, I just got an 03 Marauder last night. I put maybe 20 miles on a cruise and parked it. Took it to work this morning and 3rd was slipping. It was reving to about 3k then would shift around 45mph. After a couple miles of driving it seemed to go away.
Lunch time came and I took the car out and 3rd slippage was waaayy worse. Drove a few miles and it wasn't clearing up. Maybe a mile later I came to a stop light. Foot off the brake, gas, revs, doesn't move. Try 1,2,D,R nothing. Cycle through again, again, nothing. Turn car off, restart, moves! Few hundred feet, slip, slip slip! 20mph 3k and going nowhere. Turn off car, restart, drive a few hundred feet, slip slip slip!! Repeat, repeat repeat for a few miles til I got back.
So, from what I've read the trans took a dump on me. I want to do an Eaton swap in the near future so I was thinking of getting a performance transmission and having the PO install it to make up for this mess. I;d do it myself but I bought this as a turn key car that I didn't have to mess with yet. I have enough projects and I don't need another.
Another option was to have the PO get another 4R70W most likely from a Vic and throw that in. Or get my money back. The car isn't bad. 134k miles but the original engine was ****ed by a Ford dealer and threw a rod so it has an Aviator engine with around 100k the MM intake.

So, that said, what are some good performance transmissions? I've seen ATF-Speed mentioned, BC Auto, but no actual long term reviews that state the durability/longevity. I'm probably looking for a stage 1 around 5/600hp. I don't think I'll be going above that anytime soon. I don't mind spending money for a GOOD transmission but I want to be sure it's gonna hold up. Altho I'd rather not spend much over the $2k mark.

So the original motor threw a rod at 34k? That's a strange case with these motors unless it was very boosted and beat on which rings the bell of how the tranny went. If you know for a fact that the motor was replaced and you did not pay more then 10k for it your ok. A rebuild would be the safe thing cause you will know it will last

First off, did you check the transmission fluid?

Second, if there's sufficient fluid in the transmission, what color is it, and does it smell burned?

FWIW, start with the simple stuff first, then move on from there.

Return your car if you can, sounds like it was really beat on.

If wanted to go the cheap route you can pickup used 4r70w's for ~250-300 and swap it out. There are members running JMOD'd stock trannys with 400+ hp all day. Better yet, return your car, buy mine and do an Eaton swap which will easily put you in the 400+ rwhp range.

Sounds like they put in the wrong trans fluid...all done

I had my trans rebuilt to "Art Carr" stage 2 by Reinhart automotive.
it was the tightest trans I have ever felt, I drove it for 60K miles and never had an issue.
The art carr kit is very good when installed by a real ford tech as mine was.

I think he was referring to the advice some of us have been offering you relative to buying a Marauder. Don't spend every last dime you have to get a car, as you'll need some cash for repairs that may crop up. This thread illustrates what can happen, even with the very best of intentions.

It happens, and having a nice car with no money to maintain or operate it gets old, real quick. (Ask me how I know; been there, done that...)

ahhh. Yes. I understand, is good advice indeed. Thats why Im waiting till may-june to work on getting one. Although as for the op, I Dont see how these problems didnt arise during the test drive.

Agreed, you think the slippage would have surfaced earlier.

At 134k it threw it. The Ford dealer supposedly did it. The car was dropped off not running correctly and the guy got it back not running. I saw pics of the swap and the invoice for the engine. I wouldn't have bought it just because of this but the price was RIGHT.

Yea, it was at the proper level. Smelled like burnt crap and was brownish reddish. I'm pretty sure I smelled it cooking...

That's why I'm shocked. it was fine during the test drive, it was driven 50miles to my house and I drove it 20 after with no issues. It died like overnight...The PO is just as shocked. otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

I spoke to the guy today and this is what's gonna happen. He works for a cab company and he is getting a rebuilt transmission with under 20k miles from a spare cab and putting it in. He took the car for a ride and said it shifts great. He's gonna pick it up tomorrow and hopefully have it in by saturday night.

BUT...what's the deal with the torque converter? Should that be changed? I was told the Vic ones are different. How do check a converter to see if it's ok? From the sounds of it(well from what I've read) it's just the actual transmission that ***** the bed and not the TC right?
