Bit by the Soft Axle Issue

Well the time has finally come.
I thought when I reached the 80K mark and still on the original axles, that I squeaked by, but such was NOT the case.

When the MM reached 82,250 I noticed was looked like 2 tablespoons of differential fluid by the passenger rear tire. After closer inspection, the wheel well was quite wet with fluid and had a greasy type smell, basically what gear oil / differential fluid would be.

It wasn't just an axle seal, but the whole axle, bearing and seal. So had it done.
The interesting part was, the driver side they told me was fine.
Now the question is, "How long does the driver side axle last?"

    Any guesses?

I had a bad seal and both axles were fine. Bought a spare set used, now I just hoard them....

    Me too

My '03 has a build of 09/24 and when the 410's went in at about 94,000 miles it was discovered that one axle was very bad & the other perfect (still is). Maybe they got a good batch late year and mixed them in the build sequence so some get one good and one bad axle?

Most of the wear is on the right axle......mine was shot at 177K miles but while in there I did both of them!! Mine had a horrible "wump...wump...wump" sound driving it!!

Road crown and engine torque throw the most weight on the right axle making it wear faster....that's my guess FWIW!!

    Good Luck!!
