The rubber circular plug I was asking about is at the bottom of the transmission, which I believe to be a drain plug access hole. Do you have a picture of the area you are talking about?

I was leaning towards cracked flexplate, but I would think the noise they make will change when the vehicle is placed into gear.

I had a bad cat on my Grand Marquis. Drove me nuts until I finally figured it out.

I had that noise before.. Cold start you cannot hear. After driving for 10-15 the noise is there. I managed to get underneath the car one day, I used a rubber garden hose as a stethoscope (shade tree hacks) and I tracked sound in my exhaust... I was under the belief that maybe it was sound resonating thru it from the engine block, until I put my ear to the rear catalytic, talk about extreme clanking, I hit the cat with a hammer, (insert miracle word here) the sound went away instantly. Took to shop, guy said the cat was toast, it had tons of play inside the chamber. The exhaust pulse was pushing the ceramic core back and forth inside making it seem as if it is a knock noise.

To you and the guy who mentioned it before good call. I actually took a video here and you can tell it sounds like the cat to me. The crappy thing is the rear converters are new magnaflows. Check out the video and you can hear it. Probably just going to remove them as I am not getting headers any time soon.

Edit: by the way, this noise seems to be different than my original thread about the ticking. This seems to be an additional noise. I'm betting it's the converter.

Definitive video showing the rattle is confirmed to be the drivers side rear converter. I just bought the POS new. The ticking may be the front converter. Could be a good excuse to get headers.

Did you receive the used Precision Industries torque converter?

I did sir thank you! Once I get the chance I will probably just buy a new flexplate and put them both in at the same time. I definetly have two different sounds going on. The one is my catalytic converter, and the other is either the flexplate or converter. It's coming from that area. Thanks again for your generosity.

    Update:

Removed the rear cats, the marbles sound went away. Drivers side cat was bad. It was a new magnaflow. Pretty disappointing there. Oh well, the car sounds better with only two cats anyway. Will revisit the torque converter/flexplate sound in the near future.
