    4.10 Gear Install Question

Can a regular shop install 4.10s or does it require a specialized "Gear Shop"? I asked my mechanic (Family business), who has OUTSTANDING reviews and so far trustworthy if he can recommend someplace to which he replied "We can do it here". He also said for me to buy the parts, not a problem.

Also, besides the Ford gears, what else is recommended to replace while they're back there? I'm at 96,000 miles.

Spider gears, 31 spine axles, differential cover with a drain plug....how much money do you want to spend. If your na, i wouldnt stress the 31 spline axles. The diff cover with a drain plug makes changing diff fluid a clean and quick job.

If he owns a repair shop then I would be floored if he couldn't handle a simple gear swap. As for what else, definitely a set of clutches, new bearings and seals all around, a new pinion nut, & new ring bolts at a minimum. Don't forget Friction Modifier as well or you'll be regretting it in a week or so..

    I'd use the shop.

Since the rear will be out and I assume you have a decent amount of miles, I'd rebuild the diff using carbon fiber clutches, Ford ring and pinion set, master rebuild kit, solid crush collar, axle seals, axle bearings, diff cover with a drain plug and synthetic 70w140 gear oil (eliminates the need for friction modifier).

If the gears are quiet when driven, it was setup properly.

I doubt it. I work with the previous owner and he hasn't changed them. I don't think the first owner had a reason to since he sold the car with only 25,000 miles on it.

Before I start searching for sources and part numbers, have a round-about figure on total price for these parts? Any site vendors to recommend?

Time to stop reading post about how much members LOVE their 4.10s and get on the ball. Looking forward to it!

    Thanks.

With those kind of miles Pete I'd rip out the 8.8 and go with a 9" rear with 5.13's, 31 splines, big ass yoke. That way when you drop in the 427W and built 5 speed tranny you'll be built proof at the track.

Unfortunately, my working man's budget won't allow all that! lol

    Thanks for the tip though

I suggest you ask the shop to check play on the outer wheel bearings well before you decide what parts if any you are going to replace along with the gears. If the axles are bad you need to plan for that and make some decisions on spline count in addition to the other parts.

I did mine years ago so the prices would not be valid.

    Check with Tommy at Sparta.
