This is a GREAT kit and I have installed a few. I think I did an early kit that caused the relay to buzz when the lights dimmed out. Then a capacitor was used to stabilize the line voltage on later versions.
I believe this kit could be made using some ABS plastic and a heat gun and standard trailer lights or LED versions. If one was so motivated the door trigger wires could be accessed in the door boots. The driver door trigger (dark blue) goes to ground when the driver door is open ONLY (prevents all other doors from chiming when opened). The other 3 doors trigger wires (cannot remember color) do the same and will turn the lights on if any of the other 3 doors were open. If using LED's simple diodes would allow these to be cumulated and any source of hot 12 volts could power them by getting the ground from the respective door trigger wires.
Like this would be instant on-off but they'd only illuminate if a door was opened.
