It should pass with the rear cats removed. Unless the tech really really knows his cars or is told to look for the second set of cats he'll never know they are missing.

I suggest you hang onto the rear cats in case you get called to Star testing.

Yeah so I'm going to have them deleted and just hang on to the rear cats. I just had the car smogged yesterday so I should be good for two years.

Another reason to not live in California

Smog Check at a STAR Station

Some vehicles require a Smog Check at a STAR station. This includes vehicles that fail Smog Check due to excessively high emissions levels. It also includes vehicles, based on Smog Check history and other data, with the greatest likelihood of failing their next inspection. The Department of Motor Vehicles registration renewal notice indicates if a vehicle requires inspection at a STAR station. Instructions are provided on the back of the renewal notice to assist consumers with the STAR Program.

My 1988 gets STAR station all the time. Probably due to age and I've failed before. STAR used to be called "Smog Test Only Station" where they are more thourough. Guess I can look forward now to my Marauder getting STAR station too I guess. >:-(

Why not gut the rear cats and then reinstall them? Visually they are there, but sound is improved ... No?

My experience is empty cats ring like a bell on acceleration....sound like crap!!

Gut 'em and run a straight pipe through 'em!!

I actually did this on my 99 F350 7.3 powerstroke. Didn't even think about doing that on the marauder.

You will fail both inspection and OBD reading.

The question is whether it will pass a tailpipe sniffer test. It sounds like these STAR stations may be a bit more thorough than a regular emission station.
