    4.30's first impressions

I picked up my hooptie tonight from Hans at Deans Performance after having my 31 spline set up (Thanks Melanie!) And slightly used 4.30 gear I bought over the summer installed. I was really scared to go foreward with the gear from all the nay sayers around here, some I listen, respect, and trust their opinion, but it seems the vast majority have never even owned 4.30's..., and with Joe begging me weekly, I said screw it. Remember FIRST impressions, and I change my mind more than fish drink water... I figured at his awesome price of $250 I could just have him replace it again worst case senario. I went from stock gear to this for no reason really, just like to be little different, damn near new gear set for $80 locally, and opinions are just that, opinions. Easy to change if me no likey.

I have put about 40 miles or so on and so far AWESOME! This was every aspect from stop and go, 45, and up to 70 on the highway. No drone even with my exhaust, MUCH peppier when in overdrive easing into the gas to maintain speed, and overall the feeling of no "loose throttle, hesitation, lag" basically set your tow down and blink and your at 55.

Cons, anything above 60 you start to see where fuel economy is gonna suffer. Amazingly, I am only 50 RPMS higher at 55 then I was. Now is the trade off, it takes more gas to maintain speed above 60, just a pinch more, but definately more. 70 and your at 2500 RPM and the car feels "ready to RUN" That may be a little annoying on long road trips, but I do that maybe twice a year tops. The faster you try to push it, the more she starts to really climb in RPM's and you definately feel the engine working harder. Good thing my ageing self is all about launching and accelerating, but have no desire or care for high speeds anymore. I normally just click the cruise at 70/75 or so, now it will be 65/70, no big deal, I'm not too much in a hurry anymore, I do plenty of that at work!

Also, I am a little curious now on how she will run at the track. Sure, I would like to know the new diffference in ET's but more worried I am gonna run out of gear and may need to step up to a taller than stock tire? All I know is I am definately not running them 26" tires anymore LOL! If everything goes as planned, I won't get the chance to see the ET's anyhow as I am planning to finally install my 3500 mile cobra short block, valve job, COMP cams, POSI port, 2.8 upper, 4LB lower, the new Walbro 400 pump, and killer chiller way before the track opens. But that is only if my taxes don't hit too hard and work stays stable, otherwise back on the back burner. "Just a toy"

The last thing I miss is my 39 MPH downshift! Now its 30! Oh well, just have to relearn the car I guess?

I set this car up for around town fun, that is 95% of my driving. I was a little concerned that I would have to have Zack lower my OD down as I had him set it to not go into OD till 53 MPH and lock up at 65 awile back. As luck would have it, there must have been another variable that works off of because it goes in at 42 now with lock up at 47 is still just as perfect feeling as it was before.

Traction? Can't answer that one as it was only 41* when I drove it. So yes, even at 70 the tires immediately got to spinnin before I was even all the way to the floor. (Gotta love a roots blower!)

Joe's gonna take the car and give her some drive time and give her some spankings to compare his 4.10's and very similiar build to my set up, but I can't see him thinking its too much different to his as I don't think it was all that. Hell, I'm even tempted to try 4.56's now!

Give me a couple months and some warmer temps to get you all a better comparison, but for now, i'd say just do it if it isn't a DD on the highway. I feels so damn strong and ready to take names.

Yes. I love the ease of accelerating up to highway speeds. Just takes a little press of the pedal. I do miss the big downshift into 2nd gear at highway speeds though. Love the instant get up and go with light throttle.

Man. I can't wait to put both cars through the paces and really compare the gears instead off all this he said he said bullcrap. You are probably right as I won't feel much of a difference. We will see soon. Very soon!!

    4:30 gears

No BS. I ran 4:30s for 50K miles on stock internals and Trilogy S/C. Drove the car on the highway a lot. The Mod Motors love RPM & my view was it didn't matter. Drag raced it mid 12s at 111 or so. No issue with running out of RPMs. Around town and on the road course, the 4:30s made the engine feel effortless, not laboring.

When I switched to the forged stroker, I went down to 3:73s to see what happens with the higher HP. No track time yet, but the ported Trilogy on the stroker really lites the tires around town. Enjoy your 4:30s. Don't look back!

Awesome, I lived my 4.10s on the old car, will you see a difference in mpg? Yes, will you care? No

Everytime I see your car you got something new done to it and it just makes it more impressive. Let's me know where to go with my car

I would think with the 4:30 gears they would put the motor right in the power band. What is your rpm at 30 mph and 80 mph ?

I just got back from getting pain meds from yesterdays adventures.. Anyways I haven't verified MPH with the Garmin yet and the Pioneer doesn't give MPH readings but she feels right. At holding 30, she's dead on 1700 RPM's.

Give me a week or so to hit the highway for you and I will also take the Garmin to verify accuratecy.

I really don't see how 4.30s could be a issue, with O/D final ratio is a 2.88... Hell in the 60s/70s grandma's 302/351/390/429 LTD used between a 2.80 & 3.00 rear and the converters didn't have lockup(of course they had no O/D), nobody thought the engines were turning too many RPMs...

Thumbs up justbob just kickin' azz

Get the correct stall for that set-up and you can go WOT into overdrive and not concern yourself with tire size.
