Yes the wheel lock has been eliminated with the advent of the improved PATS key. I think we are PATS 3, could be 2 but I think 3.

Yes, I'm sure I checked this once before. With no key, the steering wheel does not move, but I can check again tonight if you wish ;)
(Don't have the MM today, gas prices :( , so I only drive it on Fridays. . .)

My 04 doesn't lock.
I figured that it was an improvement on the PATS key.
The lock only made thieves bust open your column to get access to the mechanism anyway.

I have one of the earliest 2003 A's which was built back in May 2002, and my steering wheel does NOT lock. It's hard to believe your's does.
Does anyone else out there have a locking steering wheel?

What kind of lock are we talking about, full on, can't move it a millimeter? Or just can't move it all around like normal operation?
Because you shouldn't be able to move any car's steering wheel like full operation for safety reasons.

I stand corrected! My wheel does turn without the key in it.
I musta confused it with my CV. It will start with no key in it unless I make sure the wheel is locked. Never bothered to fix it, because CV's are not high on the list of stolen vehicles. Heaven help you if you have a Neon though!

ok, good to know nothing is wrong with my ride, i noticed this the other day, and just figured i had a defect.. but if thats the way it , thats the way it is..i usually like to leave the wheel cut, [if im parked in an unsecure location,] so know one can pick it up from the back and move it around,,or take it. thanks to all.
