View Full Version : What primer and sand paper to buy?

I am having my car repainted but must do a lot of prep.

I have 180 grade sand paper for the roof, but what do I need for the bumper covers?

Also what primer? I have a thin primer I am returning tomorrow. Looking to start Tuesday night.

Also, can I do this when its this cold in chicago? I have a garage for a week
, but lacks heat. I can work for a space heater, but can we work without one?

I am new to this type of work.

Any help or suggestions highly appreciated.

Thank you.

You can't prime anything below prolly 60 degrees at minimum. 400 grit wet/dry paper us good for scuffing/ feathering before priming and not using body fillers. Too coarse and you will see the sanding marks thru the paint. You need primer, self etching primer, sealer. Prep work is 80% of a paint job. This can't be accomplished in cold temps. It will never flash the solvents out. Thus never cure and will come back to haunt the finished product. Supplied should come from a auto body supply place not Home Depot

Please don't do this to your car Dom. They are going to lay a coat of paint over anything you do or do not do. It is going to look horrible. Just my .02

There's not enough room here to tech advise, Motorhead350, if you PM me, I'll give you my phone #, and I'll help you with your project.

For painting questions you should really check with the experts at Home Depot. They're just amazing! Heating? As long as it's open flame you should be O.K.

03blackvegas you got it!

I borrowed a kerosene heater from someone last night to be ready for tomorrow.

OLD SCHOOL MARAUDER MEMBERS, the jokes can begin. :flamer:

I guess I need a 2K primer from what I was told. Still not sure on what paper for the bumper covers.

Do NOT listen to the advise you have been given (except for Home Depot)!

Get a good paint roller and trim brush - get the temperature over 50F, but over 60F is better. Use latex (exterior is best, but interior will also work). No worries about a fire hazard with latex and an open flame. No need to prime or sand.

Use the roller for large areas, but "cut in" the edges with the trim brush first. With a steady hand, there is no need to mask!

In warmer weather, an enamel tractor paint works well - it flows out and the brush marks tend to disappear. Tractor Supply Company (TSC) has a good selection and prices.

Why do you need primer, are you sanding something down to bare metal?

If it's just a scuff and shoot job, I would just use 400 grit to scuff it up and that's about it.

I spoke to Motorhead350 on the phone, he's pointed in the right direction, it's all relative.

That roof needs stripped with 80 grit, epoxy primed and blocked. Now it needs bodywork if your planning on the car being black.

Uhhhmmm, Dom, your trying, but, you can't beat a man at his craft. You just need to ante' up the money to have that roof stripped properly.

Or turning his Marauder into a commercial for 'automotive psoriasis & shingles'!

(most likely the picture is just a big joke)

I hate body work.... hate it.
That being said, I've done it. Lucky for me I had/have a professional body man in my Father in law. He taught me a lot. Hal has two MCA 1st place winners to his credit.

My CV will be getting a repaint after the mods are done. And it'll cost in the neighborhood of $3500.00. But, I won't be doing it as I hate bodywork.... hate it.

Good luck with you efforts, Dom.

Damage is done, it will take a skill set that I don't believe Dom has to bring that roof back.

doing your own body , paint and prep work is Nice and saves lots of money if you at least have a general idea of what you're doing or have someone who does work alongside you while you're doing it. One of my friends who doesn't know what he was doing agreed to paint a cutlass for another friend just to think he would make money.. he realized what a big mistake that was when I had to bail his ass out. I generally try to steer people away from it unless they have someone to guide them who knows what they're doing. If not you could ruin a perfectly good car fast. I wish him luck though for sure

very very real

At this point wouldn't it have been better to just get a cheap Maaco paint job for a few years until there is money to do it right? The damage that's been done isn't a cheap fix.

I tried to repaint my first car when I was 17, even with my dad's help it didn't turn out very well. We took our time, read a lot of books on painting, set up a tarp/tent like paint booth and it still was a mess. I learned that it is sometimes better to let professionals do the work they are trained for.

Car is moving along just fine. I went to get it at 8am and the guy didn't get out of bed. Another delay. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow. Work is all done on our end though.

The BBQ sanding was to upset a few and it worked. LOL!!!

This was all done properly and I have learned a lot from this. I'll never do this again. The electric sanders beat the piss out of my hands, it sucks. We had 3 sanders going at once.

Glad that temp tattoo wore off.

Whoever can tell me who had that tattoo without google get's a drink on me upon next meet up.
