Some of you may recall when I blew my original motor I coasted to my garage....that was about 15 months ago!!:D
Today I was on my road and stretched her legs again with GREAT acceleration but when I got to the fork in the road to turn left......I HAD ZERO POWER STEERING!! Also, the battery light was on but the engine was still running???
I pulled into the garage and popped the hood expecting to see a shredded belt but......look what I found!!
The belt was still threaded up but obviously nothing was turning so I checked to see if anything had locked up......NOPE!!:shake:
Do these OEM type tensioners just explode like this??

I remember that was starting to happen on my old man's Continental. The case had cracks all over it, but it hadn't blown up.
It's not that surprising.

Marauderjack you and I both pulled some good luck from somewhere today!
I was driving my 4x4 s10 on the highway and grenaded the belt and idler pulley!
Good luck for me is a Oreillys was 1/2 mile off the main highway, and the truck only got up to 240ish
Spent 51.11 and borrowed some tools, man I was so lucky it blew up there, if anywhere else I would have been walking LOL
Came home and ordered all new brakes and a blower motor resistor pack, used our rockauto discount for 5% off

Anything under stress could fail, this is why I do so much preventative maintenance..... Today I had to deal with this, an employee's pickup truck that had a tapping noise(belt coming apart) and a squeaky noise (bearing)for a week.

Amazing how some just use cars as a to b transportation , and never even look under the hood!

I constantly check stuff under the hood but after half dozen tensioners and going on 300K miles I never figgered this would happen!!:shake:
Hey Zack......what, if anything, can be done to prevent this happening again??

Well...the story continues!!:(
I replaced the tensioner and re-installed the belt and it ran fine.....UNTIL I drove it!! I heard some thumping under the hood and stopped to see what it was......and....the damn belt must have been damaged since about half of it was wrapped around the blower shaft and the rest scattered all over the place!! The dust cover on the alternator pulley had flown away too!!:argue:
I removed what I could of the belt and drove slowly home with 3 and 4 ribs of belt only!! Thankfully it made it and this morning I removed the blower, cleaned up the rest of the debris and installed a new belt........LUCK BOY again....all is fine now but it sure could have turned out MUCH WORSE!!;)
I could see where the tensioner pulley had been rubbing the timing cover for awhile which might explain the belt slip I was getting??
I would encourage all of you to keep a watchful eye on these tensioners.....I surely will from now on!!:D
Back in "Bidness" now!! :burnout:
