View Full Version : Los Angeles emissions?

I looked up CA testing and all I could find is cars 1975 and after must be tested.

Does anyone know what is allowed? 2 monitors off? Modified exhaust?

I heard their rules are the worst in the country.

I cannot find anything from the official DMV.

Thanks.

You posted about this awhile ago. You said it was easier to keep the Marauder registered out of state.

I no longer have family left in the state.

I assumed you were from the Midwest
You live in Cali?

No other friends that could help you out with a different address?

Gotta be in California at the heart of Rock 'n Roll.

I don't know if they allow any monitors "not ready", my guess is probably not. If you have stock, non-supercharged engine it is easy enough to past unless you've been hacking things out of the exhaust.

I have 2 cats removed, 2 high flow converters and headers.

Nearly all other performance parts have been removed.

By FAR....the worst state to try and get by emissions is Nazifornia!

I have 2 cats removed, 2 high flow converters and headers. That *could* be an issue...some of their inspection stations look under the car with a mirror on a stick. If the car came with 4 cats, and they only count 2, you fail.

And the headers will have to have a CARB number valid for that engine.

That is if they know the MM came with 4 cats.

Any modifications would require CARB approved parts. CARB approved parts have an EO number stamped on them from the manufacturer. And the ARB website will list those EO numbers and what vehicle they apply to.

If they notice the missing catalytic converters, they fail you on the visual. However, I've heard some smog stations don't know if our cars have two or four so they may not notice.

In regards to the tune, no smog equipment can be turned off. No check engine light can be on. I've heard aftermarket tunes can pass but they can't turn off any smog equipment.

High flow cats are not CARB legal. However, sometimes I've heard that smog stations may not notice they are high flow since they often look the same from the outside but that means you would still have to pass the sniffer.

They don't sniff anymore, they just ask the PCM if everything is OK. A properly functioning high flow CAT might pass if it "looks stock". But the Marauder has 4 cats.

If you want to take a shot with your current configuration put O2 sensor eliminators (resistors) on for the back pair and change your tune so nothing is disabled. If you can pass the visual and your car runs clean you're good. Trouble is, you would have to find a fairly lax smog tech not to notice the headers. It might be worth trying a Mustang header CARB sticker on the car. Pretty sure they don't actually try to cross-reference the CARB numbers to the model of car.

If you're going to take a stab at slipping it by the tech, make sure you get all your ducks in a row (cats or O2 and eliminators) and speak with some local folks about who to take it too. Present it as legal with headers that are CARB'd. Personally I would run 4 cats, though, as they'll be expecting that and the headers will draw attention. Last thing you want to do is get flagged with modified equipment and be forced to return to stock.

Good luck.

Chicago and LA are similiar in costs for food , utilities , health care, the biggest difference is the housing to buy and rent. Be prepared to pay 50-100% more for that, so if you got that planned in, then best of luck in new ventures

You are correct, sir. Rare for a local gas station smog checker to notice 2 vs 4 cats or flow through cats vs stock. In 10 years, I have never seen the smog tech look under the car.

New York city is getting to be like Cali. I got a JLT Cold air kit. A SCT tune kooks Headers X-pipe with high flow cats and Borla Pro-XS mufflers. And it keeped saying that the New York State inspection computers couldn't get in contact with my computer. So I had to do what I had to do. So you all know the rest.

Red Rum, none of what you installed on the car would have kept the emissions computer from being able to connect to your PCM.
