View Full Version : Mach 1 8 bolt crank is it the forged crank?

Need advice.

Is the 8 bolt manual transmission crankshaft the forged crank found in the 03-04 cobra motor?

I hear finding the 8 bolt auto flex plate is hard to find...

Is it worth buying a short block 04 with a 8 bolt( hoping this one is a forged crank) then going .010 and buy new forged rods and Pistons

Need a answer quickly please

Thanks guys

8 bolt flexplate is easy. I can't confirm what crank will be inside - best to look and verify. I've read that they have the forged 8 bolt, but with Ford, you better see it.

Worth buying? you know - sounds like just a core, if you are machining, buying rods/pistons etc.
You can get a bare block then a forged rotating assembly...
Depends on price, and truth it saves you money on a forged crank.
I'd think, not leap, on it.

450.00 shortblock with 8 bolt
I'll have to check for part# for crank.

He just pulled it from his car for built motor

YES. The 8 bolt IS a forged crank, and the 8 bolt flexplate is not that hard to find.

hmm. well I bought the motor from a stick mach1 with the 8bolt. Its in my marauder right now. And it was hard to find.

P.S. unless you are going 450HP plus, then the 6 bolt cast crank is just fine.

The stock crank is good for 550+

Nice! I went through this 6+ months ago and when I needed it no one, including head honcho at adtr could get it to me. Eventually I found one eBay down the street for $40. Good luck!

You've been helpful!

So, is there a different part # between the 03-04 cobra crank and this 8 bolt Mach 1 crank?

Do you have either part #s that should be stamped on it?

Man I appreciate it!

Sorry. I do not have the part numbers but as far as I know they are the same. Just the 03-04 Cobra block is cast iron and the Mach, Marauder, and Aviator are aluminum. Same heads with only very minor differences like 9 thread vs 4 tread for the spark plugs. The MM is probably the same with early 03's having 4 thread and late 03, and 04's having 9 thread. And Cobra's have Manly rods and forged pistons. The others have powder metal and hyper.

Are y'all talking about the forged or the factory Marauder crank?

Really? Impressive I knew the forged ones could, didn't know factory marauders could. I know the rods are the weak point, but thought the crank was only good for about 550 or so.

Forged vs Cast.... :dunno:

I'd rather have a forged crank, but my personal opinion is that high RPM and/or a crappy tune breaks crankshafts more often than maximum HP.

I have definitely not read anything saying the cast crank is good for 700hp. And the rods & piston not even close. Maybe the forged crank to 700 with many other aftermarket parts. Rods, piston, oil pump gears, cam gears, head studs ect ect. But anyway, not tying to start a debate. I'm sure results very from owner to owner.

You will be just fine with the 8 bolt forged crank. I actually went in the opposite direction. I bought a 6 bolt MM motor and trans to swap out my manual Mach1.

Read again. I didn't say anything about the rods or pistons....we are still talking about the stock crank correct? I'll get your screenshots uploaded when I have time it's a good read

Don't forget oil starvation.
How does one get 700hp from a 32V mod motor? Well, boost of course.
Is ANY rotating assembly of a boosted engine at risk? Well, yes of course.
Cast, forged, steel, aluminum - starve it of oil or detonate it and
Does forged materials vs cast give you extra protection from mild error?? I guess so, or forged rotating assemblies would be a thing of the past.
So, Ford put the forged Kellog crank in the boosted Cobras at ~400hp because cast cranks are just as good, I guess.
