Just received my gear set today (Ford Racing 4:10's) along with the installation kit. Yeah! It came with the friction modifier and 2 qts of Royal Purple 75w-90. I know Ford has changed their recommendations to 75w-140. Would this be ok to use or should I send it back and get the 140?

Its not the end of the world. Any gear oil will work just fine. (Personally not a fan or RP but whatever) 75w140 is generally preferred, but your not really hurting anything eith 75w90

RP = Michael Jordan shoes
Other brands = Puma
Basically what I'm saying is, it has a higher price tag than its competitors but works the same.

My two diesel trucks call for 140 if expecting to do some major towing, like total weight nearing maximum gvwr

If your really curious, search for a chart that breaks down where 140 will surpass 90

Might want to get a third bottle, does 2 bottles really fill the 8.8 to the fill whole?

I'm used to 8.5s taking nearly 3 bottles

I think any company that puts purple food coloring in their oil is more interested in selling oil than they are making a good oil. Plus if it starts dark purple how are you suppose to tell when its dirty?

Just a personal thing for me, I've really never heard anything but good from them.

Here is some good info on the difference between oils....

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-motor-oil-for-the-average-car/

Granted this talks about motor oil but it should apply for any lubricant.

Basically if you stick to good quality oil that meets the specs for you application and change at the recommended intervals you can use any name-brand.

Google - "is royal purple better than synthetic oil" you can read for days.....

If I'm not mistaken the 140W recommendation is a bandaid for the axle/bearing design problem. I don't think there is any evidence the ring, pinion and differential bearings have any problems with the usual 75W-90 oil.

That is possible as the recommended 75W-90 was changed to 75W-140 when the axles started to fail. New tag supplied with the axle kits said 75W-140.

I have changed to RP in both my manual transmissions, both shift better. I'm convinced...

It came with the gears with the installation kit. My concern was the weight.

All 03+ panthers not equipped limited slip were all factory filled with 75w140. Limited slip models were factory filled with conventional 80w90.

In my opinion the mineral based 80w90 was used for break in purposes only. Certain publications have listed the fluid to be changed at 5000 or 7500 miles to the preferred 75w140 syn which may be used indefinitely, or optionally 80w90 synthetic to be changed at 100k mile intervals.
