Oh excellent! I thought I had read some time ago the pre-DBW panthers needed the speedo gear. I remember when I tuned my 06 my SCT let me change to a variety of gear ratios, obviously I only selected the one applicable! Thanks for the correction!

Not much advantage in going with 3.73 gears. Most here have decided on 4.10 s and have no regrets.

I would not even bother installing 3.73 diff gears. By the time you're into parts, labor, AND the tune you'll have a lot invested for very little difference. This car should have had 4.10's from factory.

The 3.73 is what I have on the GMQ currently, new axle, gears, girlde, and $100 in royal purple less than 2500 miles. So I'm not spending any money, just swapping rear ends entirely. Otherwise yes I do agree, and wish I had 4.10s... Maybe later on

Is this going into a Marauder or a Grand Marquis?

When I spoke with Steve Babcock, he told me that he pushed for 4:10's from the factory, but was overruled by the EPA rules enforcers.

I think the only answer can be "yes"....

If it's free it's worth it.

Nothing is free! You will pay for it somehow.

It's already bought, paid and installed. I would do it myself if I had it already and just gotten a marauder.

Free, meaning no out-of-pocket cash.
Manual labor to pull the rear end out of one car and put it into another.
Even I can do that myself.
Putting in a gearset and getting it setup right, now that would cost me because I'd have to pay somebody else to do it.

GMQ to another GMQ or GMQ to MM?
If GMQ to MM I don't think it will work. Steve Babcock said they used the limo axle in the MM which is wider than the GMQ.
Someone will chime in if I am remembering wrong...

GM to MM. I've never heard the limo axle . Seen many swap threads here of whole axles

02- make use of speedometer gears
03+ do not use speedo gears, adjust via tune only
all 03+ panthers complete rear end assemblies are complete direct swap bolt in.
98-02 have different shock mounts and significantly different wheel offset, making their swap into an 03+ extremely difficult and illogical.
As most here have pointed out, if you are spending the time and money to swap gears, 3.73 does not get you much bang for your buck, but is still an upgrade if its as simple as an rear end swap.
Also consider that Marauders have much taller rear tires than other panthers, compared to 03-04 crown vics, 3.55 in a marauder is equal to 3.27 in a vic, 3.73 in a marauder equal to 3.55 in a vic, and 4.10 in a marauder equal to 3.73 in a vic. This is why most the crown vic guys upgrade to 3.73 and most the marauder guys upgrade to 4.10.
