Would 18 quarts of oil fill the engine to the top of the fill cap? I've heard of that happening. My wife and I bought a used 2013 Ford Explorer last summer and when I changed the oil for the first time, I got about 7 quarts. proibably not a big deal, but it can cause foaming of the oil.

6 quarts of new oil on top of 6 quarts of old oil = 12.

6 quarts of new oil on top of 6 quarts of old oil = 12.

guess you have never heard of this happening from kids changing oil in these places , I have seen 3 motors blown from it

just hope he dont have a antifreeze problem

6 quarts of new oil on top of 6 quarts of old oil = 12.

Exactly what I was thinking... Simple math, didn't drain old, and added new.

Wow.

Recall the guy who bought a Marauder that didn't run well at all, and the rear wheels were on the front and vica versa? When he rotated them back, it ran great?

No, I have heard of it.

It was a joke, newb's first post was that he bought a "gem", previous owner said it "needed work" and then drains out "EIGHTEEN" quarts of oil.

You would think if it was 18 quarts, that's worth 3 oil changes stacked. With more than 9-10 quarts some seals might start to go and leak or other engine problems might arise.

Okay guys update.

This is after removing the filter, and all of the old oil is evacuated. to a grand total of 18 Quarts!!

After draining, i put a new filter and I put 7 quarts of Motocraft in it. (i didnt realize the jug was 5 quarts, which isnt a big deal)

I started it and the whole motor was ticking!
so my guess is he filled and kept filling till the noise went away.

So i grabbed my stethoscope and began to investigate. I fount the rattle/tick to be in front, so i figured its the timing chain.

I had the car at a buddies so i limped it home so i can work on it in my own garage.

First things first. I did a compression check. I got 180psi at every cylinder. GOOD NEWS!
I was hoping to God no oil got passed a ring and bent a rod.

SO i figured i would go ahead and take the front of the motor apart. I got it all apart and found the issue.
The tensioner on the passenger side is deflated and the chain is slopping around somethin nasty.

all the parts are ordered and im waiting to put the thing back together.

Chuck
02-25-2016, 09:31 AM
There was no antifreeze in the oil, the transmission levels are fine.
The motor ran smooth after i changed the oil it just had the rattle.

The car is actually really clean, only has a few issues. the guy drove the car and neglected it. The door has a ding, and the roof has hail damage.

Surprisingly the motor didnt have any oil dirt on it. It looked like a normal car that has been dailyed nothing out of the ordinary

Yeah but if it was so overfilled, and if oil got passed a ring on the bottom of its stroke and got into a cylinder, it would hydro lock, bending a rod

You have the plastic hydraulic tensioners which are a known failure point from leaking O-rings. I suggest you replace them with the ratcheting iron tensioners. Really, the best thing to do when you have the cover off is to change the entire cam timing kit, Ford Racing has it for less than $500.

Lots of info on this site about known issues for these cars, and this is one of them. The Ford Racing kit (http://www.jegs.com/i/Ford+Performance/397/M-6004-A464/10002/-1) is really nice: 4 chains, all sprockets, 4 hydraulic tensioners (iron ratcheting without O-rings) and 4 guides.

Edit - check the hydraulic lash adjusters especially on the side with the bad tensioner. A slapping chain can actually beat on the lash adjusters and cause scoring on the bottom side that sits inside the head casting. I had to change these out as well after a tensioner failure.

I bought all new lash adjusters from Trickflow since i have the car apart already. Im doing water pump, oil pump, lash adjusters, plugs and whatever else i feel is necessary. I found the cloyes kit for 370 bucks so i think im just going to look for the racheting tensioners and sell the ones that come in the kit

The ratcheting iron timing tensioners you want are from a 2004 Ford Mustang 4.6L SOHC V8. Any New Edge style Mustang year with the 2v sohc motor should be using the ratcheting iron tensioners.

Someone did not use a quality oil and change it often from the looks of that.

This is mine with well over 200k miles on it, always used full synthetic oil since 45k miles on the odo. Royal Purple, AMSoil and Mobil 1, 5W20 then switched to 5W30 once I got to about 150k miles.

First of all why would i make something like that up? My life goal is to make up stories about oil to try to troll people on some forum i just joined. If the clasped tensioner and missing tensioner guides isnt enough proof that the guy tried shutting the engine up, then you can stick your head in the bucket of used oil i have sitting in the garage.

The thinner oil is all for that miniscule extra fuel mileage it provides to please our wonderful government. As an example, my 2015 Mazda 6 calls for 0w20 in the United States, but 5w30 in Canada and Mexico. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's going on here.

I use 5w30 in the MM. Since I don't drive it in the winter anymore, I will probably switch to 10w30.

This is the 2nd time the rear tailshaft seal has came out. What's wrong? How do I fix permanently no matter what MPH...?

It comes out regardless of speed? Do you notice any driveline vibrations?

keep us posted. I think you are doing a good job of saving the victim.
Any idea if/how long it was run with the over full oil?
The oil was pretty dirty. I know it was the guys daily driver until like 4 weeks ago. And the chain chewed up a lot of aluminum so my guess ot was driven like this for a while

I agree, you are lucky the oil did not get on top of pistons and lock it up

After some power washing and clean up. I painted the valve covers black and color matched the coil covers.

Every marauder i see has black valve covers and mine were bare aluminum. Any ideas why?

That paint will flake off in no time.
It needs special etching primer, auto paint or powdercoating

When i painted them i used an etching primer but there were manufacturing stickers still on the covers when i took them off and literally no sign of any sort of original paint.

04's were mostly raw aluminum covers. there are more 03 marauders, around double, and they mostly had black covers.

Yup, mine are raw aluminum on my 2004. They are starting to look cruddy from the light corrosion that is on them. I might try to see if a spray on aluminum brightener will clean them up.

I think it was one of the many feature cuts on the 04's to defray the cost of traction control. As always, I could be wrong.

03 black covers are plastic
04 are raw alum

I don't think so. Guys powdercoat their covers all the time. You can't put a charge on plastic.

Final update.

Car is together and as of this weekend and ive already put 200 miles on it.

This car has had a lot of problems due to neglect and abuse. so far I've replaced:

timing chains and tensioners
oil pump
water pump
all the gaskets according including valve cover and intake
new injector orings
radiator
coolant cross over tube
alternator
all 32 lash adjusters
new coolant/radiator hoses

I have also done other upgrades such as,
Double din install: kenwood ddx393
Rockford fosgate 6x8s all the way around
mustang chin spoiler, and marauder rear spoiler is in the works (need it painted)
new tires and rims
