So this morning I noticed a abnormal loud knock and I am wondering is there a way to determine whether it is a rod bearing, valve train knock etc..

At around 2000 rpm is when it is at its loudest which can be heard from inside with music playing. I can say it is on the driver side of the engine.

if you can hear it with music , best check the oil first and don't run it until you figure it out . or you will pop that puppy for sure . knocks are big time bad . ticks are not .it wont go away .

double knocks are wrist pins , single knocks are rod bearings , put a stethoscope on the pan , if it blows you away , time for overhaul .

a couple of coils might have went bad.

Mine taps loudly too. Its not a knock. Runs like a champ. Just makes noise. Zero given will run it until it blows.

Dang it! I say stop running it before it make any more damage inside. time to rebuild or replace the engine. Good luck!

I wish I could but I don't really have a choice in the matter, I will plan to drive it for 2 more months then ship it back stateside to have it sit in a friends garage since ill be stationed in Italy next.

You may not be able to drive it for 2 months if a valve is bent or worse. You'll put a hole thru the block it it grenades. I wouldn't drive it for any time IMO

There is a lot to be said for having a rebuildable motor with a spun bearing or bad valve vs. a grenaded hulk.

With hundreds of thousands of miles of driving, I'm a firm believer of only two additives. Techron for the fuel system and STP (Stay-Together-Please) oil treatment. I once made a bet to a friend of mine that I would take an old, previously knocking, locked up from sitting outside in the rain motor and break it loose with Hilco Lube (miracle stuff) and put it in an old Ford station wagon. I put new oil, filter and three quarts of STP in it before I started it. After smoking like a freight train for an over an hour, that sucker was still running good when I sold it 3 years later. True story.

I'm already running it in the Merc. It is much quieter.

so for a update to this:

I did a compression test on driver side and 5/6/7 came out as 125 and 8 came out to be 130

do these numbers seem low or abnormal?
also the #8 spark plug looked brand new which tells me there was no spark

any thoughts??

Dead coil in 8?

that's what im starting to believe. they are msd coils and I think I remember reading something about people having problems with aftermarket coils.

If it wasn't firing, it would be wet with fuel. Not clean!

i checked on the fuel injectors and all are working fine. changed out the msd's for the stock coils and still nothing.

do those compression numbers seem okay?

I can almost pinpoint that the problem exist in #8 cylinder. the spark plug is completely dry and the electrode is pure white like the day it came out of the box. I listened to the injector and there is a wave and when I unplug it there is a significant difference

So I got bored and was reading this, as well as all of his other threads he started to get some more background on the car. He is the previous owner. I am guessing he didn't listen to any of yall and drive it. I got it and he thought it just locked up and needed a rebuild. I took it apart and piston 7, I think it was cant remember, actually pretty much shattered, bent the crankshaft, jammed whatever was left of the piston into the wall, rod bearings and all in the oil pan, and 2 holes in the side of the block.
