There's a lot of threads on this topic but I used Simple Green diluted 1:2 followed by Back to Black on the plastics I wanted to shine. My aluminum valve covers still need some attention but the rest of the engine looks great.

Forgot to mention I had some crud baked on my intake so I used a degreaser with a soft brass bristle brush and it came out looking new.

I literally JUST did this on mine. The aluminum was oxidized and the plastic and rubber needed cleaned/dressed. Purple Power or Simple Green, mid strength dilution on a COLD engine. Agitate with a brush into tight areas or use terry towels to wipe. rinse thoroughly. Then using a leaf blower make sure water is out of everything. Run it to temperature then dress with a silicone aerosol dressing and mist all areas like under hoses and all the aluminum, too. Mine looks showroom new in about 4 hours' effort and work.

"Silicone" for an engine dressing is going to attract a lot of dust. I would use a water based dress like Meguiar's Hyper Dressing. It should be diluted 4:1 for a "like new" look that will last and attract far less dust over time.

WD-40 is a solvent, that leaves oily protective finish. Safe for wires etc.

I use a citrus-based cleaner, following the directions, blow dry and follow up with CD2 Engine Detailer.
