Motor is out, not sure if it's the original or not. Car has 283k on it. Should I replace the unit while the motor is out or are they not that bad when the motor is in? Opinions? How long do these usually last? 03 300A

If you can grab the inner tie rods and they rattle, then the bushings are worn out, then it is time to swap it out.
Not a bad job even with the motor in the car, 2-3 hours tops.

Isn't this a rebuild situation? I don't think the speed-sensitive racks are available new anymore.

They last forever.
Super easy job with the engine in the car.
No reason to replace it now.

I've been searching for a variable speed rack for a year. You are correct that new ones are not available.

Hmm.. Does say hydraulic assist.. But does that mean it's POWER STEERING.. Or Variable? I'd have to see the VAPS unit on the rack to believe it.

Rock auto had one in stock last week that was a reman and had the VAPS. Its sold out now (as I went to buy it). The same part number is on eBay and available and listed with VAPS...
