Installing Cowl hood

So I'm working on this fiberglass hood the came with the car and the fit and finish was awful So busting my hump to make it look presentable. Sides didn't line up very well, neither did front edge. The top of cowl needs work too. Lots of fun today.

Hoping to put primer on it today or tomorrow.

If the stock hood shocks are on it , it will never lay flat.

Why not take it off to work on it so as to not get all that sanding dust all over the car?

No lift support or the lower pressure ones work the best, factory hood struts will really tweak the hood.

That reminds me why I'm so scared of body work. It can take a hell of a lot of work to make a small but needed difference. More power to you.

I wound up stripping mine 2 years after straightening it and painting it, whatever form of gelcoat they are using is junk, once the glue holding the 2 half's together finally sets up, it draws in the upper, creating a hell of a mess.

Stripped mine, gel coated the hood, let it set up, blocked and primed and painted it, still looks good 2 years later.

Bottom line..... those hoods are poor quality.

Those strong arm shocks only work on the power bulge hood , i have a set and on the cowl hood it bowed so bad i just removed them all together.

I've had them on my cowl hood since I first got in early 2008. Now the gas shocks won't even hold the hood open anymore especially when it's cold. LOL

Mine was originally ImpalaSlayer's who bought CGP's first hood. He only painted the top side of the hood, not the underside. Whenever I repaint the car I'll have the hood redone properly.

The car had some Low Pressure aftermarket Strong Arm pistons with it, and they won't even hold the hood up. LOL but true.

As for doing the body work off the car,... I wanted to make sure the side are nice and flush with the fenders so it looks factory. Also same reason for the front edge. Basically I cover fenders with 4 layers of tape and then fill accordingly.

Bodywork is all done, just need to prime it now. Now it will come off car to finish. As for the dusty mess,.. I did have the car covered to keep the dust off it, but when I pulled it off I said the hell with it when I started working again. Glad I work for myself.

Both of mine came out great , just make sure you let it sit in direct sunlight for a few days so it can cure , prior to the paint work.

Those strong arm ones listed made my hood buckle up in the center.

I ended up using the lower supports from a 90's Intrepid and mounted them on the fender lip and used Intrepid shocks.

Hood raises a lot higher now and no buckling!

This is what it looked like when done. I painted the whole car. New owner is looking for original rims. I told him these came with car so Originals would be best.

That did turn our very well, good job. My hood looks like Hell these days but the paint matching is way too in-depth on my car to even consider it.
