View Full Version : Mach 1 motor question

Lowndex

For a 2004 Mach 1 motor, what are the block markings that identify the item as a Mach 1?

What are the other differences between the 04 Mach 1 and an 04 Marauder engine?

Is the Marauder PCM the same as a Mach 1?

P.S.:
I am not seeking a block. I have a motor I love. I am interested in mating a Kenne Bell liquid cooled supercharger with my motor and pass it off as a 04 Mach 1 replacement. I must do so to take advantage of the CARB certification for a Mach 1. Else, I fail CA Smog.

Blocks are exactly the same, no differences between them and any other WAP aluminum block.

The only difference is the manual equipped Machs had forged cranks, otherwise the same.

Didn't you just spend a fortune building the world's most expensive 400 horse engine?

I am asking for a CA Smog reason. A Kennebell blower has a CARB certificate for a 2004 Mach 1. See where I am going?

Is there a stamp or marking of any kind on the Mach 1 block identifying it as such?

If you want to get a nice block, go to a junkyard and try to find a 2005 to 2010 3v Mustang block with casting number 3L2E-6015-CC on it (Ford part # 8R3Z-6010-A). This is the final 4.6l casting and is the strongest. This is the same block that Ford used for the Aluminator series (M-6010-A46SC). I'm building one up right now. :D

Actually not true. The newest block I named above does have added strength and weighs 10lbs more.

P.S. The part number for the 03/04 Mach 1 block is 3L2Z-6010-AA. The casting on the side is 1L2E-6015-BB, the same as the 03/04 Marauder. The Ford replacement block was casting 3L2Z-6010-AA. This is very similar to the 3L2E-6015-CC and cheaper. I think JDM has them new for around $800.

I don't understand this logic. You are trying to pass smog as a Marauder with a Mach1 engine and a carb certified power adder?

To my understanding you are only allowed a replacement engine same model year on newer for the car your trying to pass with. Displacement doesn't matter IF it was available as an option in same year or newer model of car. But it does not say you can swap engines from different models. (Even though it's the same damn thing) because it's not the same in their eyes.

Doesn't carb numbers go by year, model of car, and engine? If so, your Marauder is technically only two of those.

Some of the posts on svtperformance mention the Mach1 kit was discontinued. Apparently due to some parts becoming unavailable. I assume that would be the Cobra lower intake.

Maybe you can find an old kit somebody rat-holed or buy a used kit off of a wrecked Mach1. The water-cooled supercharger MIGHT be a CARB approved replacement for the original 2.1 blower. If I recall correctly, the Mach1 kit was the same as the '99-'01 Cobra kit except it had brackets and a block-off plate for the shaker, so that should open up search options a little bit.

Since the block is the same, what if anything would need to be swapped off the Marauder to make this fit?

Physically, fit isn't the problem. I believe the '05 Cobra had driver's side air filter and SC inlet. It would probably interfere with the Marauder cowl and wipers.

California emissions compliance is the problem. Maybe there is a water cooled retrofit for the '03-'04 Cobra that would fit the Mach1. The problem there is the Mach1 and '99-'01 Cobra kit has a short snout blower to line up with the original serpentine belt. The '03-'04 Cobra has a longer snout to line up with the Cobra blower belt. Not sure where the '05 Cobra belt would fit in with this scheme. I believe it had two belts, but the inner belt was for the blower instead of the outer belt like the Terminator. And it had more ribs. I doubt a '05 and up kit would be CARB compliant on a '03-'04 car.

And the '05 was a 5.4 instead of a 4.6

No, one pass does mean others will. Every test is independent of prior tests.

They do a great job of unrestricted airflow and good compressor efficiency. Low speed torque of a PD blower is neat, and it will still work to 6000 RPM.

The referee applies a door sticker stating year and model of the replacement engine. You're good after that at any smog station.

From what little I know at this point the major obstacle could be the more-primitive mustang PCM (that Fordnut was kind enough to provide a model number for, thanks!!) interfacing with the Marauder.

We need to understand if the PCM identifies itself as Mustang or Marauder. Would a Mustang PCM need to be installed temporarily, or is it even compatible?

This from the guy who supercharged and put in a stick shift? There isn't another car out there that can do what the Marauder can, especially if you consider towing.

My brother just bought a 2014 CTS-Vsport. Beautiful car, fantastic ride and handling. But it won't tow. Maybe a weird requirement but separate vehicle just for occasional towing displaces a LOT of Marauder upgrade money.

Why would the PCM have to be replaced along with the engine? Swap to the Mach1 engine NA first and connect it to the Marauder PCM. If you can show the referee that the engines themselves are the same independent of the PCM then you could get a door sticker. Once you have the door sticker, add the Mach1-approved mods. Slow process, but it might work.

I did give up. When I was told by the head EPA emissions guy himself that I actually increased fuel mileage but he couldn't allow a pass because eight transmission codes had to be turned off I.E. tampering... I decided to quit trying at that point and cut every damn emission device off the car except cats and register it elsewhere. When the day comes that that will no longer work, and it will, the car goes up for sale or taken apart. It's something I'm prepared to do and simply move on.

You've got the two different Leeeeegal engine replacement options mixed together here. The Mach 1 is essentially the same engine. You can replace a Marauder engine with one from a Mach 1, keeping all the Marauder emissions and PCM configuration, and nobody will be the wiser. They even mention this in the rules. Same engine "type" can be swapped without referee approval, smogs as the model/engine of the Marauder chassis.

The engine swap approach allows you to swap in a completely different engine and smog as the donor model/engine/year. This approach legalizes CARB accessories for the more-popular Mustang.

Also, I will comment this is not a "loophole". The onerous rules were written with barely a concession to the reality that cars would need their engines replaced. This is 100% legal and by the book. Not to mention a PITA.
