View Full Version : Euro Marauderville 2016

It's time to kick off planning for our second annual Euro-Marauderville, an idea that was born last year when I met with a few Marauder enthusiasts at an American restaurant near Cologne, Germany.
Much like the American original I plan it to be a multi day event perhaps over an extended weekend period in either August or September (hopefully I won't get in trouble with the site administration for copyright violations here) I don't have a particular date in mind just yet because this is open to discussion with all of our European members to fit in with everybodies schedule as my goal is to get as many people as possible to attend. Marauder owners and enthusiasts across Europe are very spread out and don't even know of each other in many cases so I want Euro-Marauderville to change that and bring everybody together.
Once again the event will be taking place in Cologne, Germany since the majority of owners live in Germany so it should be a pretty centralized location for everybody to get to plus Cologne is also home to the Ford Europe headquarters and our car is a Ford product after all. I already have an event schedule in mind which I will describe in the following but this can of course be altered to everybodies preference.
Friday: Arrival day, I will have a table reserved for dinner at the American Miss Peppers restaurant in Frechen, a suburb of Cologne which is where this idea originally started. You will get there when you get there, we will be waiting for you. You can of course organise convoys if you so like. I will have a look into hotels in the area to see if we could possibly get a group discount somewhere for accomodation.
Saturday: Have a lazy breakfast in the hotel, then head over into Cologne to do some sightseeing, there are some great photo opportunities along the Rhine river bank opposite the town where we could line our cars up against the Cologne skyline with the world famous cathedral in the background, should look stunning! Later in the day we will head over to the Ford Europe headquarters, I will see if I can arrange a factory tour for that date.
Sunday: After breakfast we will check out from our hotel and hit the Autobahn towards the world famous Nürburgring which is roughly 100 kilometres away and takes us a one and a half our drive. Commercial traffic is banned from our roads on Sundays so the Autobahn should be relatively empty which gives us the opportunity to put our feet down a bit, people attending from outside Germany might enjoy this bit just don‘t go crazy on this! The Nürburgring is out in the middle of nowhere and the Autobahn only takes us half way there, then it will be relaxing scenic country roads for the rest of the way, speed limits around the ring area are strictly enforced so stick to the posted limits. Also keep in mind that the Nürburgring Nordschleife is a public road itself with strict rules, not adhering to these rules can get you fined in the same way as you would be on any other road.
In the afternoon it will be time to say goodbye, you can either head home straight away or join a small group that will head back up to Cologne for another night in the hotel for those who have a further journey the next day.
I know that the majoritiy of our European members are not active around the forums so I will be emailing everybody that I know of. Our main problem over here will be to get the word out, as I was saying earlier people don‘t even know of each other. How great this event is going to be or if it is happening at all is entirely up to you because I‘m going to need as much help as I can from people, I won‘t be able to set this up on my own. Depending on how much interest we get, I'm also planning to design a run of shirts to commemorate the event but before we can even discuss about that I'm going to need everybody to help me spread the word on my mission to unite European Marauder enthusiasts.
Thank you!

Hi Marvin:
Joanne and I can't make the trip this year as we are going to be spending some of July and most of August crossing Canada by train and then cruising to Alaska.
If I can help you any details from our last Euro-Marauderville adventure, just ask.
The companies that I had make the T-shirts, the clocks, and the bar signs still has the patterns and logo on file. Only the dates would change.

Hi MG Driver
Well guess it looks like I have another 1000 miles to add to the odometer.
September would probably be better for me than August as trying to go anywhere on U,K roads at the weekend during July/August is a non starter, Kids are on school holidays and the roads are a nightmare, not only that the cross channel fares double in price. Saying that don't specifically organise anything around me as there is always the possibility I will notbe able to make it depending on work, ETC

Hi Dereck,
you make a valid point we also have school holidays throughout July/August here so we should probably aim for September and hope that the weather and temperatures will still be okay at that time of the year.
The dates for the original Marauderville over in the States will be September 7-11 so I'm thinking to set ours up at the same time so that both Maraudervilles will be happening concurrently, bit of fun wouldn't it?

Are you planning on driving on the Nurburgring? That's a bucket list thing for me. I would love to ride in a taxi driven by Sabine Schmidt too.
Can you get Sabine Schmidt to drive a Marauder around the Ring? If you record her driving a Marauder I could die a happy man.
MGDriver

Yes that is the idea to take a lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. I will try to record a lap as well but I don't think we can get hold of Sabine Schmidt.

An open letter to my Marauder brothers and sisters across the pond:
Joanne and I were at the first Euro-Marauderville last summer. It was fantastic! If you can make any events that Marvin has planned....do it!
On our side of the pond, we have Carlisle in June and the Marauderville weekends. The bonding between the car owners create memories that will last forever. On some cold winter night, you'll take out the pictures and re-live your weekend.
If you can make the Euro-Marauderville weekend, do it. If it is a maybe...just try hard!

The date for Euro-Marauderville #2 is now set for September 9-11 in Cologne, Germany
Happening concurrently with Marauderville #14 in Cleveland, Ohio somebody suggested we should have a conference call with our American friends during the meeting and I actually like that idea so if anyone from the Cleveland team could chime in here maybe we could make that happen.
Thus far I have 4 confirmed Marauders in attendence (myself included) and I'm still waiting for a few more people to confirm, then I will speak to some hotels in the area about discount rates. If everybody who I invited would show up we'd have over 10 cars which would be blast but let's see how it goes.
I would also like to give a little shout out to MM03MOK and MERCMAN for sending me this Rebel With A Cause banner, we will be proudly flying it at Euro-Marauderville.

Okay Dereck I will count you in for a hotel as well so we have 5 confirmed attendees. I'm still waiting for confirmation from 3 guys in the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Spain, if he comes all the way from Madrid he'll have you beat on longest distance. ;)
Also outstanding are two US military folks stationed in Germany but they can't yet tell if they will be deployed anywhere else at the time of the meeting. For some reason I can't get hold of our Finnish and Swedish members otherwise I would have invited them as well.

I recently inquired about shipping a car from Newark, New Jersey to Hamburg, Germany. It is $ 900 plus $ 150 for port fees in Germany.
Total time for the crossing is 6 weeks.
I was thinking about Euro-M. III

I have shipped two cars to Bremerhaven, Germany (and back). Vehicle Safety Inspections at the Port are tough and make US standards pale in comparison. Few cars make it through inspection without some kind of repairs/fixes needed to meet the tough German standards even if they are "new" cars. Both of mine were less than 2 years old and I ended up spending about $500 each time to Pass the inspection. That's probably about $1,500 in today's dollars. Factor that into your calculations.
Coming back is another issue; because the car must be steam cleaned to eliminate any bug, agricultural, or fungus infestations before coming back in the USA. What a pain !!!
Insist on containerized shipping because if your car ends up on an open deck, you will not recognize it when it arrives.
Just some thoughts to add into your consideration.
jsignorelli
06-09-2016, 01:13 PM
The car would be in a container. The shipping company gave me a good rate as the car would only be in Germany for about two - three weeks. Then it gets shipped back to the States.
The shipper already mentioned the anti-pest measures. They'd gas the container, after it is sealed, to kill any insects and tag-a-longs.
As for the inspection... our club has participated in the cross Europe Cannonball run with the Mustangs. Since the cars were only in the country for a limited time (less than one month) before going back, the inspections were waived. I would apply for the same waiver, if I go with the car.
Mr. Man

Keep in mind about 2 containers are lost at sea per day for non-catastrophic reasons. That goes up to over 1600 avg when weather etc gets involved.

When I picked up my car at Bayonne, NJ years ago, there was a blue tarp thrown over a 2 foot pile of something. A guy asked me kinda reluctantly whether I was there to pick up a new Oldsmobile Cutlass. When I said No, he breathed a sigh of relief. Apparently, the ship had a particularly rough crossing of the North Atlantic and a bunch of containers broke loose and absolutely flattened the Cutlass. They were just waiting for the guy to show up to tell him.

They do insist on insurance on the cars. That is the reason... mother nature and waves.
MGDriver
06-14-2016, 09:05 AM
You can legally drive your car in Germany on foreign plates without it being TÜV compliant for up to 6 months you just have to make sure to buy proper insurance coverage. Insurance is the main concern for our authorities and it's the first thing that officers would check for if they pulled you over, if your insurance coverage is okay there will be no problems. Talk to your insurance company to see if they offer overseas driving policies.
Looking at the sheer costs of getting the car over here I would at least plan for a 1 or 2 month trip across Europe just to make it worth while doing. If you stay within the European Union there will be no problems as most insurance policies will cover driving in the entire EU.
Back on topic for Marauderville, we won't have any Americans joining us this time I've invited two military servicemen who are deployed here at the time and have their Marauders with them but one will move back to the States and the other is going down to Italy before the meeting so they both can't make it which is a shame.

As I said in an earlier email, several of the members in my Mustang club competed in a European version of the Gumball Rally a few years ago. We are well aware of the regulations and the insurance needs, as the Mustangs and Shelbys had to comply. The prize was $ 10,000. It was won by a driver from Florida. Boo Hiss!

Another update, we have an official hotel for the meeting where we will be granted a group discount which however will depend on the actual number of attendees so I'm trying to get that together for them as soon as possible. If you haven't yet confirmed your attendance please do so in the near future so we can get our rooms booked for a good rate.

Relax Dereck:
#1 - Europe is one of the seven continents, and the UK is on that continent. Therefore, you can still participate in Euro-Marauderville.
#2 - It has been my observation that most things in politics move as fast as the rotation of the galaxy. There is plenty of time before any real changes takes place.
#3 - after the initial shock and financial market hysteria settles down, cooler minds might prevail.

Yes I do know how long I am coming and was just going to book myself a room tomorrow (Sunday 3rd June) anyway, I am not worried about the cost as the rooms at that hotel seem quite reasonable anyway.
The itinerary; Arrive Friday, do Marauder **** Saturday, leave for home after breakfast Sunday morning.

The majority of people could only confirm their attendence 1 month prior to the meet because of how their employers give out their work schedules so by the time they were ready to make a hotel reservation the official hotel was already booked out.
Therefore we now have a second official hotel where most people will be staying at for the event.

I'm sorry to hear that Dereck.
Have you got any other possibilities to reach the continent? I've used the DFDS ferry service to Dunkerque a few times, it'll add some time to your journey but the Dunkerque ferry is not so busy which makes it for a much more relaxed crossing than going via Calais.
If nothing else there's also the Harwich - Rotterdam ferry which however is an overnight crossing, I've done it once and wasn't a fan of it but if all others routes are shut it might be worth looking into.
Just throwing out some ideas, hope to see you on Friday!

Okay folks, it's almost been two months since Euro-Marauderville. I have been busy moving house into another city so I didn't have much time for anything else lately. Just this week did I get around to sort the pictures on my girlfriends camera that we took and here they are.
Euro-Marauderville was quite chaotic. We started our convoy on Friday afternoon, met up with Esilar (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=15433) in his 04' SB from Berlin and MEC_MAR (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=19841) in his 03' BLK from Münster at an Autobahn rest area near Dortmund where we set off to Cologne together... right into the weekend rush hour.

Eventually traffic started to clear and we had a relatively good run down to Cologne able to get our speed up to 120 mph at times before...
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098051/fullsize/dsc09598.jpghttp://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098052/fullsize/dsc09610.jpghttp://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098053/fullsize/dsc09622.jpg
... traffic started to back up again in the Cologne area. On our way we learned that MaRauder2 (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=15872) who was working his way up from Switzerland in his 04' BLK blew his air suspension and was stuck at a rest area near Kaiserslautern about 100 miles south of Cologne. He was running larger rear tyres and his rear being all the way down was rubbing on the tyres so he couldn't continue. Some of your guys who are active on Facebook may have seen his struggle being posted up at the time.

In the mean time we finally arrived at our hotel in a Cologne suburb, whole two hours behind schedule!

We continued on to Miss Peppers American restaurant where Dereck (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=10951), his wife and his 03' BLK from England were already waiting for us for over 4 hours. We also had a local guy, Peter and his wife with their 10' Grand Marquis joining us who heard about our meeting online.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098060/fullsize/dsc09672.jpghttp://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098061/fullsize/dsc09674.jpghttp://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098062/fullsize/dsc09677.jpg
Whilst having dinner we tried to assist our Swiss friend who was still stuck with a blown air suspension on the phone. We eventually discovered that, having a 2004 with a small spare, it might just give him enough clearance to move on. He was able to crawl up to Cologne on his small spare and arrived in the early morning hours, having no suspension at the rear whatsoever his back was aching so all he wanted upon arrival was a cold beer and a warm bed.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098065/fullsize/dsc09685.jpghttp://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1098066/fullsize/dsc09682.jpg
On the next morning our first stop was a tire shop to get a set of smaller tires for our Swiss friend so at least he could drive normally again although still looking like a rowrider.

Back on the Autobahn we had to part ways. MaRauder2 was called in for work the next day so he had to head back to Switzerland and, still having no suspension at the rear, he had to take it slowly. MEC_MAR received an emergency call from home, apparently his mother was rushed into hospital not being well so he also had to go home. Dereck, Esilar and myself made our way down to the Nürburgring where we were supposed to meet Merchil (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=17780) and his 03' SB who drove up from Ingolstadt that day.

There is no direct Autobahn route to the Nürburgring, our way led us on twisty country roads and through tiny little villages which made it for a nice relaxing cruise.

We met up with Merchill at the world famous Motorsport Paddock at the Nürburgring and it was time for a group photo together with the "Rebel With A Cause" banner that the site administration sent us!

Unfortunately having beautiful weather out there the Nürdburgring Nordschleife was rampacked full and they wouldn't let us on for a lap so all we could do was to take some more pictures with our cars.

A bit disappointed we were heading back to Cologne but we had some fun on the way back. Esilar and Merchil were racing their Silver Birches, forming a rolling Marauder road block, 2003 vs 2004 who might have won?

Rolling in for dinner at Miss Peppers again late at night. After dinner it was time to say goodbye to Dereck as he was staying in a different hotel and was heading off early in the morning on the next day.

Great pics of your get together. Thanks for posting. Wow ... Representation from Germany, Switzerland, England .... And Berlin too !! Love the road and Autobahn pics. Memories for me.
Seems like MaRauder2 took the round-about way up from Switzerland through France to end up on the A6 near Kaiserslautern. I lived near there in the 70s and again in the 80s. Maybe the Autobahn from Basel north is too congested now. That used to be a nice trip.
Too bad that he couldn't get his car looked at in Kaiserslautern. If I had to break down or have a problem in an American car, that would be the perfect location since that entire area is a major US presence with Vogelweh, Landstuhl, and Ramstein Air Base.

From our hotel window the next morning, can you find the Marauders?

Oh, there they are! Last group photo before it was time to say goodbye and hopefully until next year.

On my way home I was following Esilar for half of his way to Berlin so pretty much until my doorstep I still had the great sight of a Marauder rear end ahead of me which was fantastic! My last photo shows his Silver Birch with the Cologne skyline in the background.

Euro-Marauderville Statistics:
Marauders in attendence: 6 + 1 Grand Marquis. That's 30% of the entire Marauder population in Europe based on my 20 car estimate.
Nationalities in attendence: 3 - Germany, England, Switzerland. That's 43% of European countries that to our knowledge have Marauders registered in them.
Colors in attendence: 2 - Black, Silver and that's the best we can do since we don't know of either a Blue or a Red Marauder in Europe. Of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Years in attendence: 2 - 2003, 2004 yes that's a 100% here!
Miles travelled: 1730 and that's 2780 kilometers for us metric folks.
Dereck (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=10951) - 03' BLK - Somerset, England - 500 travelled miles that's his second longest distance award in a row!
Esilar (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=15433) - 04' SB - Berlin, Germany - 360 travelled miles
MaRauder2 (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=15872) - 04' BLK - Aargau, Switzerland - 340 travelled miles
MEC_MAR (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=19841) - 03' BLK - Münster, Germany - 90 travelled miles
Merchil (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=17780) - 03' SB - Ingolstadt, Germany - 320 travelled miles
MGDriver (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=19288) - 03' BLK - Paderborn, Germany - 120 travelled miles
Euro-Marauderville 2017:
Yes there will be a third one, hopefully less chaotic then this time. Planning will start concurrenctly with Marauderville MVXV in the States and we will probably choose the same date as them again in the hopes that next time a group conference may acually work.
Thus far possible locations have included the tiny country of Luxembourg and the German cities of Frankfurt and Stuttgart as well as my hometown of Paderborn which as I have found out actually lies close to the midpoint of all of those that have attended this year.

Hi Marvin:
Thanks for the update and the pictures. We are in the planning stages right now for our Carlisle Pennsylvania, Marauder weekend, in June. This is a car show that blows your mind...thousands of Ford products, and around 50 are Marauders.
On a side note: Joanne and I are making plans to visit Austria and Switzerland this year. Can you tell that we like mountains. Two years ago, we toured all of Germany, from the north to the south, and then back north again. This past summer, we crossed Canada by train, and then took a cruise ship up to Alaska. The Rockies were our target.
Next summer, it is the Alps again.
