View Full Version : My car collection
Since I can't afford the Marauder Museum I want to build, I found a way to combine my joy in modeling with my car collection that mostly has come and gone. For the last few years I've been building models to represent cars I own or have owned. Took a few pictures today.
Now I'll be the first to admit that the build quality isn't perfect, so be kind.
No plastic model here for the first one. This is my dicast 2003 Marauder.

And my 1963 Marauder S-55. This and the 2003 are the only ones I still own.

Me too. I was a model railroader in my teens, and I've built plenty of other model cars over the years. I just don't have the patience to be really good at it. Like I said, a few years ago I thought it would be good to have 3D representations of the cars I've owned. I already had the two Marauders when I started.
There are a few more I think I can find if I keep looking. I had a V8 Vega project a long time ago, a '63 Comet, an F-250, and one or two others I'll bet I can find models of.
Thanks for the kind words.

Here's a model of a '64 Marauder that matches mine as well as a diecast of a different color and trim. How did you get the stainless trim to look so good on your blue '63?

Excellent!
Just silver model paint (Testors). The blue on that one came out of a spray can.

It sure takes a steady hand (which I don't have any more) doesn't it?

Yes it does, and you can see from some of the others that my hands are not that steady either. That's OK. I get the general idea across.

I would like to know what you started with on the 03 Marauder model. Where you able to letter "Marauder" in the rear bumper? Very neat I have a diecast collection that I need to thin out.

That is really awesome, I use to be into models pretty heavily but haven't been able to find the time for the past several years. Seeing yours makes me want to get back into it. Thanks for sharing!

That was a Marauder diecast that was available back in the day. I've done nothing with it. I think it says "Marauder" on the bumper, but honestly I don't remember, and damn it now I'm going to have to look when I get home.
There were at least 2 available. This 1/25 (?) scale model was the most common and I'll bet others here have them. It came in a plastic case with Marauder graphics that I obviously didn't take a picture of.
I also remember someone did a 1/18 scale model that I was never able to get a hold of. There may also have been someone converting 1/25 diecast Crown Vics into Marauders according to my foggy memory.

I didn't make too many stock models when I was a kid but does anybody remember the Li'l Coffin, Mysterion, Beatnick Bandit or the Orange Crate? I also had a Don Garlits dragster model. I traded everything away in a bad deal when I was young and naïve.

Yes it does say Marauder on the rear bumper, just like the real thing.
A memory is a terrible thing...
I added a new one today. This was my 1972 Datsun 510. This is the first car I've ever owned. I don't have any pics of the actual car, but this is pretty much what it looked like, sans the flared wheel wells.

I used black steel wheels with wide tires at the rear. It was a L4 stick, and I had an aftermarket stereo (don't recall the brand) with a Craig Powerplay amplifier.

My dad started me on models when I was seven too, but that was in 1987. I have my first model that I built, a Johan ambulance and about 400 unbuilt kits. I was lucky that my dad wouldn't let me get rid of my built kits when I got into my teens.
Model building is a lost skill that most kids today have no interest in. It's sad because building a model teaches a lot of valuable skills.
Just ordered another one. I'll let you know what it is when I get it put together.

that is neat. great job they look great. I too did HO trains and models as a kid. Matter of fact I remember building some cars that were cast metal kits. I keep saying one day I'll get back to building models, probably when the kids are out of the house (I do 2000 - 5000 piece puzzles occasionally to relax now. I do have some cool S-gauge trains. I collect those if I come across them at estate sales.

What kit are you looking for? I've got a lot of semi-old kits and a lot of the newer ones. Epically American cars from the 50s to 80s.

What I thought I had coming was a 1/25 plastic Datsun 2000 Fairlady kit. I'm looking for 2 of those. I've found 1/18 and 1/43 die cast models, but now that I know a 1/25 kit was made I'm holding out for a while.
I had two 1600s, a 1970 and a 1966. Not really a lot of difference between them.
I've been highly motivated to expand this collection lately and I've added a couple more cars.
This is my 1979 Mustang.

I was able to find a 1990 sherriff's car in 1/64 die cast. It's not perfect, but it makes the point.

More importantly, I upgraded my Marauder S-55 390 car from the slot car to a 1/25th scale model and it looks a lot better than the slot car. I've even tried to get the rust correct.

Kirk, I've been looking for a Datsun Fairlady kit. As far as I've been able to find there was a lot made in Japan but there hasn't been any on eBay in a while. I'd send Tom at Spotlighthobbies an email and he can try and find one. Spotlighthobbies is in Grand Rapids and Tom is very, very knowledgeable about model cars. If he can't find one they don't exist.

This car was important to me. It was my second, I have a lot of great memmories with it (some I couldn't tell here), and it was a really cool car.
I started with this model

And modified to this, copied down to the sheep skin seat covers. Biggest problem is the steering wheel's on the wrong side.

The model didn't come with that cool hard top with the portholes :)

Probably write your own ticket if you still had it. I liked these better than the Toyota convertible from the Bond movie.

Front row second from the right- Mercury EXP, something like that?

1983 Mercury LN7 RS
1.8 EFI, 90 HP with a 5-speed manual. The EFI was extremely rare and this is the only one I've actually seen.
Handled GREAT and got 47 mpg.

Maybe it was the Ford version I thinking about.

Yes, Ford version was the EXP. The back window in the Merc was bubbled instead of notched, and it had 2 radiator grill slots instead of 1.

You have had a couple 64 Marauders. I'm curious what these are worth. There is one for sale locally in very nice original condition for $9800. It's a 390 car.

If you're in the market, and it runs/drives well, and everything else checks out, I'd buy it. If it's as solid as it looks and really is a 54,000 mile car I don't think the price is outrageous. Maybe even a bargain.
