View Full Version : Replaced motor not turning over

Hey I just put in my Aviator motor but its not turning over. Everything seems to be wired back in place with the exception of the little peace thats clamped to the starter wire that bolts to back of cylinder head, could that stop engine from turning:confused:.

Other possibilities:
Pulled plugs to drain water off of piston.. pulled fuel pump fuse (my buddy didn cover motor completely before rain:shake:
Oil is very low because im trying to drain water before i put my new oil in(plan on turning about 5 times to cause no damage...Could this send signal for motor not to turn over.

Is there a fuse that could be blown? (starter is good) starter fuse?

THANKS

Just a little on the pistons driver side...its not turning over though

I wouldn't try turning it over with any water . Water does not compress, it bends rods.

Ground issue?

Take the plugs out and use a breaker bar on the crank to see if it's seized. Do you hear the starter engage? Do the lights dim? The engine ground will make or break the starter circuit.

Are all 3 connectors in and seated under the brake booster?

Can that metal peace that on the starter wire that bolt to the back of the head be causing this?

Is the small wire getting 12v when the key is turned to start?
Does it start in neutral?

You need to troubleshoot

why are you trying to start it with water in it?????????? you want to bend the rods and start over again????

Plugs are out...fuel shut off...

If the plugs are out, crank that sukka over and get rid of any water that seems to be getting back in the cylinders?
Put plugs back in and fire it up ....

Are you saying that "water is still getting into it". Do you mean the oil pan or the tops of the Pistons?

If you were able to crank it over that much with the starter, then I suspect it's not in the cylinders... It'll bend rods if you dump a clutch, and the Pistons have a lot of water in the hole

Never heard of a starter able to "bend rods" even on a diesel with oil in the cylinders

I think your in the clear if it's cranking, where's this water at?

Water should be shooting out of the plug holes and then stop. Are you sure the whole intake isn't full as well?

At this point I'd be pulling that intake off.

Plugs are out...fuel shut off...

You did not specify that. It sounded like you were trying to start it as in fire it up. Do as suggested and get water out of pan, intake, etc

I have a bent rod from a head gasket gone bad that was in a 1993 Mercury V-6 Cougar. I bumped the starter several times not knowing that the #3 cylinder was full of engine coolant. Under the right circumstances a starter can bend a connecting rod. I can post a photo if you like.

Please do, I can't see a starter having that much torque.

Pretty cool if it did LOLZ

Went out to the garage, found it and snapped this photo a few minutes ago. I did bump the starter 4 or 5 times while hydrolocked and when it started it had a slight to moderate knock. Drove it home 12 miles away and took it apart. Put new gaskets, 1 rod,1 piston, full set of rings, rod and main bearings and the usual things like plugs, wires and water pump. Drove it another 45,000 miles before trading it off.

A starter can bend a connecting rod, but I have no idea how often this happens. I did all the work myself so I know for certain that this piston and rod came out of the 93 Cougar my wife drove about 18 years ago.

Holy crap. This crow tastes good!

One hell of a starter!!!Bumping the starter against the coolant several times surely wasn't helpful.

I agree. I've had to do some serious stuff during KATRINA just to get things going. Maybe I felt flicking the key meant instant hydro lock

Another cylinder could have lit, might not just be the starter. Or it might, who knows? Cranking with liquid in the cylinder remains a bad idea.

I too bent a rod on my Tahoe with the starter. Intake gasket was leaky and I was unaware of it. Wouldn't roll over one morning. Pair of jumper cables got it started though.

How about an update. It's like the suspense part of a mystery movie with no ending.
