View Full Version : UA paint code just basic black? Am I seeing sparkles?

I spoke with a car painter friend today and we discussed him painting my rear spoiler when I get it. Well, I checked the paint code on the door jam and it reads "UA", just as he predicted or "Basic Black" as he called it.

After washing and waxing last weekend I swear I see tiny metal flake. Barely noticeable but definitely under the clear. Almost a rainbow of sparkles. Is this a pearl? Think my car has been repainted?

Just doesn't look like "Basic Black" to me. Can someone confirm this UA as basic black.

Thanks!

UA is just plain Black.

My 2008 Taurus' paint code is UA and is "basic black".

The closest other Black paint code is UH and that's Tuxedo Black (metallic) but wasn't introduced until 2009.

Do you have pictures so we can compare?

I'll try and post some tomorrow if the sun is out. Hopefully my phone camera will pick it up.

There's no way to see the flake in the pictures I took. All I see is a reflection of me trying to take a picture of the smallest flakes ever.
I checked the door jams and they seem to be more of a gloss black. I guess the car has been repainted at some point. Now I have to try and match the rear spoiler to the paint on the car.

Thanks for the info!

When I had to replace the header panel (don't ask...owner stupidity) on the Blackbird, the shop that painted it for me confirmed UA is definitely not metallic and I see no sparklies anywhere on the car.

I bet yours is tuxedo black since it was repainted.

Just have your painter look at it before buying paint, why no pics?

Probably so. Paint sealant was applied/reapplied at 11,144mi according to the Carfax so my guess is that the paint job wasn't that good to start and the PO had some paint work done under warrantee. I would have never guessed it has been repainted.

No pics because the flake was impossible to see in the phone pics I took. Sorry.

Defiantly not Tuxedo Black, it looks like a bass boat even at night.

I have the Tuxedo Black Taurus SHO and it has the Rainbow metal flake in it. I got a tube of the "UH" touch-up paint 9pmp-19500-7211a) from Ford; but I don't see sparkles in it at all. Maybe someone mixed up a batch of UA and UH and it got crossed up somehow ??? Maybe someone got confused over the "A" and the "H" in the code. They do look similar at a quick glance.

In my black 2004 Marauder maintenance file I have a dealer service manager's business card with handwritten " Paint Code 'L. L.' "
Might date back to a minor accident when the body shop had to repaint the rear bumper cover.

maybe the paint gun wasn't completely cleaned before it was painted.........

Sounds like a repaint that ended up with solvent pop. Imagine billions of microscopic pin holes filled in with the debris from wet sanding and buffing. It looks like fine dust or "sparkles" that are trapped under the clear.

This happened on my hood twice. It sucks.
