Marauder owner contacted me about a rebuild for his car. His transmission lost 3rd gear. Originally I was going to use 2007 CVPI core I had, but ended up using that core for another project. Instead I got another low mileage Marauder transmission.
The core was disassembled for inspection. The residual fluid was reddish orange, there was minimal clutch debris on the pan magnet and the yellow plug was in the pan. No damage or unusual wear was found when the transmission was town down.
Current plans for car are to install a super charger and drag race the car on the weekends. The transmission was full rebuilt and the normal lubrication upgrades were performed and the hard parts were upgraded. Something new I am incorporating in my heavy duty rebuilds is the Sonnax high capacity forward clutch drum. http://www.sonnax.com/parts/4373-smart-tech-high-capacity-forward-clutch-drum-kit
This newly designed drum allows for more clutches to be installed and increases the torque capacity and reduces forward clutch failure. For this build I chose use the 6 disc set up, which is a 20% increase. I also installed a hardened 300M intermediate shaft and heavy duty one way mechanical diode intermediate clutch, which is held to the reverse drum with a spiral locking ring.
The valve body was fully rebuilt and the Jmod was performed.
Transmission was fully air tested for proper operation and new U-haul transmission pan (with drain plug) was installed to make servicing easier.

If you don't mind my asking, how much does Sonnax get for the forward clutch drum?

I'll keep you in mind when it's time for a rebuild. I'm originally from GA, now living in the South Carolina area so I'm close.

Its a one way roller clutch, most people call it a "sprag". basically it turns in one direction and locks the other direction.

In the case of this transmission, the one way roller clutch locks when the intermediate clutch is applied, this allows 2nd gear to happen.

Originally Ford used a 7 roller, then went to a 14 roller, then went to mechanical diode clutch in 1998.

Ford updated the mechanical diode in 2007 to a heavier casing and more locking teeth.

Ok that makes sense now. I know what a sprag is. Never heard it called a mechanical diode before

good luck with it! doing yourself? My transmission R&R cheat sheet:

remove driveshaft
disconnect H pipe (you'll need new stainless bolts)
disconnect o2 sensors
remove 2 center nuts and 2 long bolts on each end of X member
Pry that mother out.
support trans/engine with jack.
3 trans plugs come out.
disconnect shift linkage
remove trans dust cover
breaker bar 18mm on crank turn clockwise (front of car)
so you can reach and unbolt (4) TC bolts
5 or 6 bolts around bellhousing - used 3'+ of extensions.
keep trans jacked up and level.
pull trans dipstick tube out of pan (from above)
pull trans straight back - away from engine.

It's in.
This is the third time I've removed the transmission it on this car.

I managed to connect the transmission to the motor. Currently, the Jack is holding them up until I can get to it tonight. I only get an hour or two to work on it every night.
The wife broke her ankle on Sunday, so when I get home, I do as many chores as I can while hanging out with my two sons (4&1).
It's almost Friday, and I'm about spent.
But if all goes well, I might be driving it tomorrow evening!

Busy guy! Good luck with it. Just did this job myself, ugg. Would not want to pay the $1000 in labor most shops would charge to R&R transmission.

Where are you getting $1k from? Book time for R&I is only 4.2 hours, 3.1 warranty time. Are shops near you charging $175+ per hour? My shop rate is $112.93, even with shop supplies I would be under $600.

I'm glad I don't have to take my vehicles to shops.
