View Full Version : Top tier Gasoline
Murphy/Walmart is not on the list.
Here's link: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/gasolines-healthier-car-aaa-says-130400082.html
Seems to be worth while to get top tier.
Regards,
That can't be for the whole country, I stay away from Valero (big mileage drop), SuperAmerica = Speedway (got surpised by them when octane dropped from 93 to 92) I have steered clear of BP (have heard of vehicles dying after stopping at BP, maybe the additives into a dirty engine????, I didn't want to chance it) Shell 93 (expensive).
Marathon has been working great for me, Ill keep this list in mind while traveling. Thanks

I used BP religiously, until Quick Trip started offering discounts on gas if you buy groceries at price chopper
Funny is in my 2011 mustang, the owners manual suggests using BP. Thought that was odd.
BP and hyvee here have ZERO parts of ethanol in premium fuel, where as QT says up to 10% could be had per gallon. I have zero issues with QT gas.
If I'm out of town, I try to hit "busy" gas stations in hopes of better quality fuel that hopefully gets replenished more often than not
13 TANKS of fuel in 3 days on my DD is my personal record

I have actually seen some Fords that had the BP gas symbol printed on the gas cap. My wife's 2006 Freestyle has it. I think my daughter's 2009 Escape has the same thing. I assume that this was some sort of marketing gimmick and that BP paid Ford for the privilege of riding on its gas caps. The general public probably didn't even notice. Bad marketing idea.
My cars use Sunoco, Exxon, or Shell. With Giant Food points, I can get a $1.00 or more off a gallon of Shell. However, the station is not as convenient as Exxon and Sunoco now that I am not making that commute to work.

Both Kerosene and diesel fuel have low octane ratings. Kerosene is in the 15-20 range. Diesel is about 15-25. Both are in RON (Research Octane Number). No MON (Motor Octane Number) numbers are given for kerosene or diesel. Gasoline grades/octanes shown on pumps in the USA and many other countries show the average of RON and MON. On the pump sticker this says ( R+M)/2.
I was buying Marathon for "buy local" reasons, but guess I'll probably stop now. Interesting stuff.

I don't know whether to trust the "Top Tier" list or not, so I run a bottle of Techron through the fuel system when I change the oil and don't worry about it.
I'm more concerned about fake octane ratings - I've never heard of anyone (Bureau of Weights and Measures or whatever) actually checking it, and I would NOT put it past some of the fleabag places around here to sell lower octane gas at the higher price.

I usually run Shell 93 in the Marauder, but it is almost $1 more than their 87. Of all things the SUV loves Murphy's, but I run Techron through it every 3K miles. I can get Costco gas and its usually as cheap or cheaper than the name brand gas. No more Hess here. Sunocos are few and far between. Theres a place about ten miles north that sells no booze 93. I plan on trying that for the next fill in the Marauder.

Hell, that incident happened more than 10 years ago back in April 2006. Must now be legend because most posters today were not even members yet back then. Probably less than 10% remember it first hand.

I cup my hand and put 1/4 of a bar shot in it then hold it in the Sun.
If it dries with no rings and leaves no odor on my hand it then goes in my tank.
I have heard of some doing the taste test looking for bitterness but the ethanol can cause problems so I don't recommend it.
