View Full Version : Wideband A/F Gauge Questions

The AutoMeter Wideband A/F gauge I was talking about last summer is now installed. (This is the normal schedule for stuff like that to get done around here, what can I tell you.)
So :

1. The sensor is in a bung welded into the pipe that replaced the rear cat on the driver's side. (It's after the front cat.) My understanding is that this is Ok, but will give a reading that is leaner than the true AFR.
How much leaner ?

2. On a car with a Trilogy, running the tune that came with it, and no other mods, what kind of readings should I be looking for at various RPM's ?

3. The gauge is an AutoMeter Ultra-Lite Pro Comp Digital gauge. It is NOT the gauge with two control buttons in the face ("A & B"). Should the digital display change, dim or anything else when the headlights come on ?

Thank you :)

I've had it installed with no cats and post cat with no difference.

Mid to upper 11's under WOT, never 12. WOT is the only real concern for numbers. Other than that it comes in handy for diagnosing when needed. 14.7 at warm idle is the perfect mix, but it will jump around so don't be concerned.

Can't remember the LED, I don't believe it dims.

Its reading around 14.7 - 14.9 just tooling around. Drops at WOT, but I havent really pushed it.

11.2 to 11.4 wide open throttle is the safest and most powerful zone your wide band should be reading
If the number is 11.8 or higher like 12.0 your burning up your Pistons from detonation if you don't have race gas or methanol

Go wide open for 5 or so seconds and see where your at, can't be too bad since you have been driving it like this for how many years?

It's strong and never knocks or anything. I will check it tomorrow. I think it is reading leaner than that.

My a/f gauge read over a hole point richer than the Dyno's sensor.
The bung is between the cats.

the replies above mine are truth.
what you read is normal.
gauge should be a constant sweep high/low of stoich = 14.7. it's always adjusting to be there.
under load and WOT, you'll see a more steady reading, should be rich as mentioned above for safety. 11.2 seems perfect for mine, tried 10.8 and 12.6.
one adjustment in the handheld to small amount +/- fuel at WOT.
Good point said about gauge accuracy to dyno gauge..
Mine was same as dyno during testing pulls. thankfully.
good luck - most important gauge to watch on boosted cars. Tied with fuel psi.

You have to buy a separate rheostat dimmer to make it dim. At night it's way too bright.

mine is like the other gauges, tied in with my dash lights for dimming.

All my other gauges are, but with the one I have you have to buy a dimmer separately.

Is 10.4 too rich at WOT? I just installed mine and am examining results.

Going to a 1/4 mile track tonight

Mine doesn't dim. Also, it reads leaner than it should under WOT, Marty used his wideband for tuning. It is installed after cats.

Yes

Is your air filter dirty as hell?

How long does it stay that rich?

Are your tail pipes black on the inside?

Cleaned and oiled air filter last month, Cleaned MAF several days later as prescribed.

Stays that rich for 2 to 3 seconds and goes to 11.2

Tail pipes are, and always have been black on inside.

Lidio 93 tune.

following, still new to this engine stuff ;) Mine is same location as the first O2 sensor, just on the opposite side.

Went to Empire Dragway last night. First time back to a 1/4 mile track in 29 years. yes, 29 years.

1) First base run, running rich on A/F 10.4 to 11.0. 1/8 = 8.44 @ 83.6 MPH - 1/4 = 13.11 @ 104 mph. 1.873 60 foot

2) I cut fuel and selected 2 leaner. A/F 10.6 - 11.2. 1/8 = 8.57 @ 82.5 MPH. - 1/4 = 13.35 @ 102 mph. 1.889 60 foot

3) I added fuel back and advanced WOT Spark 2 degrees. A/F 10.8 - 11.2. 1/8 = 8.16 @ 85.7 MPH - 1/4 = 12.73 @ 108 mph. 1.84 60 foot.

Someone broke at the big end of the track so everything else was 1/8 mile.

4) I added 2 more degrees WOT spark (+4) A/F 11.0 - 11.4 and ran 8.06 1/8 mile @ 86 mph. 1.79 60 foot.

SO, I have a been driving a retarded car!
