View Full Version : 2015 Taurus Stalls Out

Yesterday morning my work car lost power over the course of a mile or two, and then stalled out and wouldn't start. It felt like it was running out of gas, or has a clogged fuel filter or something. It has half a tank of gas in it.
During the 1 1/2 hours I waited for road service, the battery went dead.
The tow driver jumped it and it ran, poorly, so he determined that the battery was bad.
I asked him how it could be the battery, if the car was running and then conked out in the middle of the street. Also, it is the factory battery and it is only 1 1/2 yrs old. He attributed this to "hot weather."
I limped it to to a nearby Pep Boys with him following me. I told them what happened and the car was there all day. They called late and said the battery was bad, and they put one in. I was at work, so I went by and picked up the keys, and came back for the car after they were closed.
It is still doing exactly what it was doing when it crapped out yesterday. It stumbles off idle, and will stall if you give it any gas at all. If you let it slowly come up to speed from idle, it will run. I barely limped it home and am taking it to Ford this morning.
I went to put a bottle of Techron in it this morning, and the Techron went in the filler neck and right onto the ground. WTF.
Ideas ?

The car has no filter, just a sock on the bottom of the pump.
The wrecker driver is just that, a wrecker driver, not a tech, had he been a tech, he would be working in a shop, not towing cars, I would take his advice lightly.
Pep Boys....... see the above statement.
Sounds a lot like a fuel filler neck not attached, the car will throw a code for it, as there is a sensor in the filler neck.
There could also be a loose air intake or vacuum leak after the MAF, has any work been done to the car?
Is there a reason you wouldn't take a 2015 Ford to the dealer for service?

Agreed, it definitely didn't seem like a battery problem, but he insisted that it was and he was what "Ford Roadside Assistance" sent out.
Pep Boys....... see the above statement.
Agreed X 1,000, I would never go to Pep Boys under normal circumstances, but they were only a few blocks away and I figured they were up to the task of putting a battery in it.

No codes.

No work has ever been done on this car other than PM .

No, that's where it's going today. I don't think it will make it through traffic so I called Tow again. It is not going anywhere else, regardless of what Tow says.
If they send the same guy, they will need a proctologist to retrieve my shoe.
. . . . And thanks !

It is possible there is a vacuum leak, I have seen more than 1 car come back from a PM with loose parts under the hood. You have to loosen the intake tube on those cars to get the air box open to check the filter, it is possible someone forgot to tighten it.
Also, your battery is covered under the 3/36 bumper to bumper, don't let them fool you into believing otherwise.

There is definitely 100% something wrong with the filler neck / gas tank.
You may also be right about something loose somewhere else - there can always be more than one thing wrong. The roads here are all ripped up and could easily knock something loose.
Good point about the battery, too.

I'm willing to bet that the air intake was left loose in one way or another, and that you've got a fly in the MAF sensor, I see it pretty regularly. I could be wrong, but based on your symptoms and the lack of a CEL, that's what I'm betting on.
As for the filler neck issue......I don't want to sound like I'm asking a stupid question, or sound like I'm questioning your abilities (which I'm not!) but did you use the little white funnel from the trunk when you added the techron? The reason I ask, is that I also see this on random occasions as well.

Unless using a standard dispensing gas nozzle that's pushed in all the way, the white funnel is needed to get anything into the filler neck and into the tank.

Adding to what JBFTech and The Birdman said, I recently saw a Lincoln MKS and it has one of those capless fillers that requires a special funnel to use anything other than a fuel-pump nozzle...
2015? Is it still under warranty, I'd have it back at the dealer ASAP and I'd ask for a loaner.

It is at the dealer right now, the service manager said it sounds like the throttle body, and said there have been some problems with them ? I'll know by the end of the day.
As far as the special little funnel tool, THANK YOU ALL. Prior to today, the only thing I ever put in the tank was gas, so I was not aware of it.
You learn something every day - this has saved me 87,943 "Mother Eff-ers" that I would have been throwing around if I was learning this by the side of the road at 1:00 AM after pouring half a can of gas on myself ;)

The fuel filler funnel will be in the trunk usually in the styrofoam on or near the spare tire.

Ford has had a lot of issues with the drive-by wire TB on it's cars. The Fusion, Escape, Focus and Edge (forget what year range) had a recall on it. My 08 Taurus had a TSB on it for cleaning. I had heard some issues were still around the 2013 Taurus model but figured they had sorted the problem out. I clean my TB every other oil change.

We are having a lot of issues with throttle bodies lately, even with vehicles that have under 1K miles. That is a good possibility, "generally" they set a code, or turn on the wrench lamp, or display reduced engine power in the message center, HOWEVER, not always!! So it's a good possibility you need a TB, which will be warrantied so that's a good thing.
Regarding the capless fuel filler and the need for the funnel to add something other than fuel I noticed the last time I was at WalMart picking up some oil and filters that one brand of fuel injector cleaner said it was "capless fuel filler compatible". They have also had a yellow copy of the OE funnel for sale for a few years now.

Update : Unable to determine problem ; car is spending the night at the dealer's.
Service manager says it does NOT look like the throttle body, but rather a "fuel trim" problem that they're still trying to figure out.
I imagine they're flying in specialists from Dearborn . . . .

Check "All of the above."
Service manager said the MAF was definitely bad. The car was running better after they replaced it, but still not to spec - further examination determined that the throttle body was also bad.
Both replaced, car is running fine.
Plus it has a swell new battery, Lol ;)
Four days later, car is done.

I'd let the wrecker driver know, that way he can refer back to its not always a battery that's the problem.....smh.

Eh, **** it, fewer and fewer people seem to know what the hell they're doing, or give enough of a **** to care. I'm ready to run up up the white flag on this kind of stuff.
