I want to change my torque converter myself. Do I have to remove the exhaust to drop the transmission?

Thank you in advance.

If you need to ask that question, you probably shouldn't even attempt it.

If you dropped the exhaust, it would make it easier to remove the cross member and a number of other things. I had the most trouble dropping the cross member. I never experienced having to use so much muscle. Good thing I ate my spinach.
Good Luck!

I attempted that job once and never again. Well worth the money to have a shop do it in my opinion. Unless you have a lift and all the right tools at your disposal.

Dom, there are 2 issues:

1. The crossmember is a beotch to remove and trying to do it on your back likely won't give you enough leverage...you'll learn many new cuss words.

2. Transmissions are way heavy and bulky and awkward to manipulate alone. If you've never done one before, doing it on your back in your driveway is a tough way to learn. Good on ya' for wanting to try, but I think you'll regret it...

This. I've dropped the trans in mine twice, both times I had help, and both times we pulled the cats out to reach all of the bolts. And yes, that cross member is a whore. It doesn't like coming out, and it doesn't like going back in. Get a friend to help because you'll need an extra person.

No, you do not need to remove the exhaust. just have a super long extension with a swivel on the end for the top bolts holding the transmission to the motor. I also did it in my driveway. Took about 2-3 hours, first time pulling a trans.

Experience in the street?!! Someone's a badass!!!!! Swapping the trans in a four-wheel-drive vehicle means nothing when trying to drop the trans out of your marauder. If you are lucky enough to get your exhaust off the car, you're gonna be met with a bunch of I told you so posts when you can't remove the crossmember without crying and begging for help. Personally I don't give a flying **** what you do. I just know I changed a transmission is in these cars without a lift, I have also removed three crossmembers and walked two people through exactly how to do it.

I can't wait till you try you're the one who's going to be choking on the fat veiny one.

So you refuse to answer my question at first and wish for me to fail.

Says a lot about who you are. If it was one of your on-line butt buddies, you would answer a simple yes or no followed by a joke leading to an inside joke.

Whatever is stressing you out, I hope you overcome it.

I said if you don't know the answer you are not prepared at accomplish it, as in you have no idea what you're getting yourself into. It's not rocket science, you can clearly see the exhaust has to come off before the crossmember comes out.

You're sad because all you do is fish for help and whine about everything.

I will give you one bit of advice when you try to get the crossmember out, 6 to 8 jackstands rated at 12 tons each because when the car shifts and one slips out, you will thank me. Other than that you're on your own.

.

Wrong.

I simply asked a question and you decided to be a jerk until I put you in your place.

Due to needing so many jack stands, I won't be attempting this in the street. There is a local garage with lift and tools I can go to, chicago DIY. I'll go to them to be safe about this.

Thank you.

It's the worst time pulling a trans I've ever had. It eventually turned into a controlled fall under the car..
