View Full Version : Cut coils, now blown-out KYBs 5k later

So, I cut the coils on my MM last year and installed a pair of KYBs out front earlier this year. Got an alignment, too, and absolutely LOVED the ride.
Fast forward about 5k miles/5 months the KYBs are now trashed. Like, oil spot on the garage floor trashed. :alone:
Have any of you lowered MM owners had luck with other shock absorbers, or is shortened life expectancy a reality of riding around with cut springs? If that's the case, I'll have to investigate the RideTech kit offered from ADTR with the big-ass warranty.
Going back to the factory ride height ain't an option.

I used the stock shocks for around 50,000 miles and Monroe for probably 20,000 without any failure, but the ride sucks. My opinion of course.

Monroe for probably 20,000 without any failure Are you using the Gas-Magnum Severe Service?
I'm also wondering about the Gabriel 79900 that is spec'd for the CVLX and LWB cars.
edit, now I see your mod list in your sig. Thanks.

It's sort of a moot point, but KYB does have a lifetime warranty, if you go that route, don't tell them it has cut coils..I'm sure that will void it..
I too want to go Ridetech, I may buy them this year, but might not be installed until next year, need to talk to my alinement shop.

I bought mine off of Jolly Roger so I don't have the warranty option.
Either way, I refuse to change shocks every year, so I need to not use KYBs.

I have over 50k miles on KYB shocks - 1 coil cut in the front and rear lowered so the frame rails are level front to back. shocks are still very good!

It could have been just bad luck? A lot of owners here with lowered cars use KYB and I don't hear much complaining.

A few people on CVN have been noting KYB quality issues of late. Wonder if they "changed the formula" so to speak.

I've got KYBs with cut Marauder coils. They've been on since March and an easy 5000 miles, and everything is still all groovy.

I cut one full coil ten year ago. No problems. 45K miles on OE shocks. They're about to all be replaced.

I cut a coil on my grand marquis and installed marauder spec kybs. 15k later still good and tight. I think you got a Monday or Friday shock

Not entirely sure this was solely a KYB issue. I've had many sets on many cars and never had a single issue. Of course, any manufacturer can have /make a bad set...
Monroe Severe Duty is the other heavy duty set recommended.
