Well the ol' girl decided to throw a fit (a.k.a. the CEL) the other day while I was looking at a project car to possibly buy. Apparently, she doesn't even like me looking at other women!

Anywho, scanned the next day at work and got a P0401 EGR insufficient flow detected. I quick peek at the data stream showed the DPFE readings were skewed, and I manually commanded the EGR valve with the expected/desired result: rough idle borderline on stalling. So great, my DPFE is going south. No problem, the DPFE is a separate sensor, right?

WRONG! Please tell me WHY IN THE WORLD the engineers at Ford decided to integrate the DPFE into the EGR valve on the 4v? ARGH! I refuse to spend $120 on an entire valve when it's just the stupid sensor that needs replacing.

Looks like I'll be living with the random CEL, I suppose at 196k miles it was bound to happen.

Because Ford engineers don't really design the part..they tell their suppliers what they need, size of area it need to fit in, what it is supposed to do and a budget for that item. cheaper wins most cases.
