For anyone who remebers, my car lives outside in NJ.
On the rear quarter I have this coming in from behind:

Most body shops around here said to me "Oh , just enjoy the car! Just have fun!"
Freaking what?!? :mad2::mad2::mad2: FIX MY CAR, JACK ASS!
I can't believe the amount of shops who just can't be bothered.
I did manage to find one guy who does high end cars. He will patch in a new panel and even blend it for $350. That sounds ok to me but I what the hell do i know about body stuff? (not much). Obviously he can't guarantee that there isn't a bubble coming in one inch above the fix and to think of this part of the yearly maintenance now.
Replacing the whole panel is the right fix but would be about $2,000. So, uh, patch it is, it seems.
Is this the right thing to do? WHAT SAY YOU?!?

I had a similar issue on a Grand Marquis. Same spot, not quite as bad in terms of rust. I used a wire wheel and ground it down, then hit it with POR-15, code-matched spray paint, and clear. Held up just fine.
$350 sounds about right for a body shop repair.

Looks like surface rust to me. That area gets blasted from stuff coming off the front tire. Our SB had it a few years back. Had the our dealers body shop fix it. It's holding up well but because of the area it will be prone to wear.
Hit it with some naval jelly rust disolver front and back of that panel. It will look 100% better then spray it with some rust check or krown rustproof to really slow it down until you can get it fixed. My car doesn't get winter or really rain driven but I still get it rust proofed using krown up here in Canada.
For 350$ that doesn't sound too bad. Invest in some rust proofing though if you want to keep that car long.

A good body shop can grind it down to bare metal and refinish it correctly. Look for fancy candy paint lowrider shops.

he will patch in a new panel? I surely hope not. I live up in the great white north, we use salt on our roads in the winter. let me tell you i have seen rust ten times that and could be fixed with no bondo or patching of any type.
If you are really that worried about it, take it to a ford or gm dealer with a body shop, they stand behind there work. I'm not a "take it to the dealer guy" but if that little bit of rust worries you. have them fix it.

You should pull off the rocker panel covers, watch tho, the clips break easily. rust gremlin often lurk under them.

I had the same thing on both sides. Gouge it out, treat it with rust dissolver and bondo. Sand. Paint. Easy peasy.

POR-15 is not a paint, it is insurance!
When I buy a car, I strip it down as best I can to get access to the inner panels and floor boards. I do this inside and out.
I then POR-15 any place dirt, water, and salt can hide and eat away at the car. POR-15 expands and contracts with the metal as it changes temperature, so it doesn't develop cracks in the surface.
My 1969, 1970, 1973, 1989, and 1993 Mustangs have never had Rust because of this treatment. You can paint over POR-15, but only if you prime it while it is still tacky. Once it drys, nothing will stick to it, not even paint.

That's what I just fixed. 16 clips with shipping just under $100.

Pre-mv1! Like the hooters meet in wayne if i recall correctly. I first met JET there too.
You got me to climb onto the roof of a denny's to take some pictures of everyone during our drive down in mv1. haha.
I still talk to JET. He sold his car a month or two ago. That thing happened where you mod a car so much it gets away from you in terms of reliability, fixibilty, and cost. He is down in Richmond, va now, his restaurant is there.
