View Full Version : Kook's header removal

OK....I admit that I am now totally brain dead!
It's been 12+ years since I installed the Kook's headers on my Marauder engine.
Now I've got to pull the engine and I cannot, for the life of me, remember how I installed these frickin' headers.
( I used OEM studs and nuts with added stainless steel washers under the nuts.)
All of the nuts are still tight.
Some of these nuts are impossible to get to!

I don't think that I installed the engine with the headers bolted onto the motor.
I'm almost certain that I had the headers lying on the front cross member and then lowered the engine in.
But I cannot believe that I had the patience and willpower needed to bolt these M'fers up to the engine!......:mad2:

Can you pull the motor with Kook's headers still bolted to the heads?
The 'kickout tube' on the passenger's side that runs under the HVAC box looks like the killer.

I don't know about Kooks, but I pulled and installed my engine twice with Stainless Works LT headers on the engine.

I would just try to yank it out installed myself. But swinging the A/C pump out of the way opens up some more real estate.

Ask Zack or Curless. Curless just worked on mine he can tell you

The passenger header can stay on. Just remove the drivers side. That's fairly essy

You have to have just the right length extension(s) and socket. It's do-able. I've done it 3 times. It is a tedious job.

Yep, I used a 1/4 drive. I gathered up all of my different length extensions and both deep and shallow sockets, kept trying until I came up with just the right combination.

I used a long extension and went through the suspension, using it as support.

My "Trans Guy" cuts a groove in the threaded end of the bolt and uses a flat screw driver to pull it in then tighten with the extensions.....or so he said??

Musta worked??;)

Thanks!
Now I do remember pulling the front wheels and running an uber long extension in from the wheel wells.

Haven't had a chance to re-try my patience yet.

I've pulled and installed an engine with kooks headers bolted up. It can be done, just a bit tricky getting the pass header by the AC box. A good engine leveler so you can tilt the front end of the engine up helps.

The starter itself was more difficult than anything else. I left the pass side header a bit loose so it was easier to wiggle the starter in there before tightening everything up.

When I bought my Marauder it had the Kooks setup. I pulled the motor with both headers attached with no issues. It was a tight fit but nothing broke. I had a load leveler to help in angling things though which made it easier.

Not Kooks, but MAC LT's, blower, whole front dress, harness, the whole package! [emoji4]

Taken out from the side and didn't even touch my hood thanks to the hood strut mod I did years ago. [emoji1303]

From running to concrete 2.5 hrs. I could shave that time in half anymore. Leaving the exhaust on is the only way to go. Actually leaving everything on is!

Understood, but my Kook's headers have 1 pipe on the passenger's side that sticks wayyy out and routes under the HVAC box.
Those MAC LTs fit much snugger to the block than these PITA Kooks.

(Plus the Kook's are only 3/4 length on the passenger's side and the collector faces down at a 45 degree angle and is not parallel to the ground.)

OK...so the answer is:

YES!
You can pull the motor with both KOOKS headers on the engine.
The 'kick out' tube on the passenger's side does jam up against the HVAC box, but it is doable.

Now, if you have an extra deep 7 gt oil pan also, thats when its gets tricky. The width of mine had 1/8th inch on both sides inside the engine mounts on the cross member

Sent from my iThrone using Tapatalk Agree. A/C unit must come away-three long bolts as I remember. Then, skin a few knuckles getting the nuts off & bolts off. take time with lots of PB Blaster.
