I pulled down my center console to replace some bulbs, in the process breaking the two middle clips. I never want to pull it down again so I figure I might as well upgrade the compass while I'm here.
I was thinking of sticking an lcd in there and back it with some microcontrollers for various functions. One problem is the size of the enclosure. the problem is its size. 80mmx21mm with a viewable of 76x16. I was looking into this NHD-0216CW-AB3 (http://www.newhavendisplay.com/nhd0216cwab3-p-8028.html) but it is a butt hair too wide.
Then I remembered that some 2004 300b had the compass with the full word spelled out instead of my 2003 2 digit one. I've only ever seen it once, maybe in a dream. Is it a segment display ( like this 2004 Lincoln town car) ?
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NzQ2WDEwMDA=/z/h5AAAOSwdzVXt0Jb/$_1.JPG with only 1 line or is it a dot-matrix that does two lines? (2005 grand marquis with parking assist option, 2006 town car)

I'd really like the 2nd one but it seems to exist only in that one picture. What is the part number? where can i get one?
Don't need the console, just the compass module (for the lcd). The consoles on ebay are $74ish each but can't find the module alone.

my 04 looks like top display - didn't even realize this but one of the other guys in Chicago noticed the 04s with moonroof (short consoles) have full words (North, East, South, West) spelled out

does yours also have the 2 button "mode reset" like the top picture or the "lamp mode lamp" 3 button?

I believe 2003's had N, S, E & W while the 2004 read North, South, East & West.

I mounted my Scangauge in place of the compass. Yes you have to modify the opening and I kept my original overhead console. Looking at the "new" overhead console - can you tell what the difference is and what is came out of?

All of my digital compasses display the same thing all the time;
"YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE"

My 04 has a single digit compass display. Pressing mode just turns it off and on.

The second picture is an overhead console from a Lincoln.
My factory compass on my '03 hasn't worked in years. Is there a process to try to figure out if the whole unit needs to be replaced, or if there is another fix?

Probably a bad solder joint on a resistor.
Pull down the console, unscrew the compass module, pop the case off, resolder the 150 resistors back on. That fixed mine. Also, fastblackmerc fixes them.

Looks like it was an option on them as well if you got the homelink thing with it. Otherwise they got a tiny 2 light console with no display at all. Or on a grand marquis if it has the park assist it seemed to get the dot matrix ones.
It looks like I found it on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/03-06-Lincoln-Town-Car-Overhead-Console-Homelink-Message-Center-Maplight-Tan-E-/361313725907?fits=Year%3A2006% 7CMake%3ALincoln&hash=item541ff9edd3:g:K9gAAOSw pdpVcf~1&vxp=mtr). Ugh, $70 but better than $300 for just the module from ford. If I got one would anyone want to buy the console shell without the compass module?

I finally got an overhead console from 2004-2006 lincoln.
The lcds are more different than anticipated.

80x20 vs 100x35. On both, the green plastic display area is the same. the 2003 futaba 2-bt-92gn is pressed right up against it but the 2004 samsung scg-80s16a is set back in the case quite a bit to give it room to fit. Between the size difference, mounting difference, and unknown pinout, I decided not to bother going further with it.
This isn't a total loss as that information gives me hope that i can mount the NHD-0216CW-AB3 and tilt it back slightly to fit in the compass housing without modification and still look good since it is 76.0mm x 24.6mm. We'll see how it goes. I'll be updating in the mp3 player thread as this is all the same project now, more or less.
the connectors for the consoles. Tottaly different. the 2003 is a single connector that breaks out to the 4 pin red plug for the compass. the 2004 has 2 connectors with smaller pins.

Anyone want to buy a tan overhead console? :D

Probably a bad solder joint on a fuse.
Pull down the console, unscrew the compass module, pop the case off, resolder the 151 fuses back on. Gavin, those are not fuses, they're resistors.

Bad solder joint or missing resistor because of a bad solder joint.
I can fix it for you.
PM me for details...... very cheap.
