I have had an intermittent engine squeaky noise for ~6 months. Changed belt and checked pulleys.
It has become more frequent and occasionally makes a "dying squeak" when engine is turned off.
Short sound clip.

I am guessing belt tensioner or a/c compressor?
Any feedback appreciated.
Thank you.

Sounds idler pulley. Also make sure the belt tensioner pulley is not rubbing the front timing cover.

As respects the ac compressor did it squeak whether it was on or off?
Thanks to everyone for their input.

At first only when on, then started doing it all the time. It was only occasionally at first, would do it while driving so it was hard to pinpoint. Then eventually it started doing it regardless of being on or off. Now on my 06 gmq it had what I describe as a hooting noise around 1800 rpm. It would come and go. Wouldn't do it when I was under the hood, but I would get back in the car and would do it. Personally I think the car was screwing with me. Drove me nuts for months. I replaced the alternator,(expensive lesson) checked vacuum lines everything. Ended up being the new idler pulley I had installed when I changed out my belt. I bought a stethoscope from harbor freight and started listening.

When I had the idler pulley problem, it didn't squeak at all. Mine sounded like a supercharger whine that would increase in pitch as the RPMs increased. The whine was pretty steady and not intermittent. It became noticeable while I was at MV7 in 2009 in Indianapolis.

Pop the belt off and turn car on for a moment (not too long as no coolant circulates and it will get hot fast)
If the squeak is gone, ten you know it is a pulley, tensioner, idler or a/c clutch..spin each one by hand when car and belt off, they should feel silky smooth, no play, no "gritty" feel
