View Full Version : Rough Idle -Throwing Codes

So, it's my turn.

Started running rough on Sunday.

Showed p0316 so I replaced the COP in cylinder 6.

Still running rough. Started throwing p0171 so I cleaned the MAF.

Then, showed p0301 as well as the other two codes again p0301 p0316 p0171.

Should I be looking at something other than plugs/COPs/MAF?

Thanks,

Mark

P0316 is from misfire at start up in first 1000 revs....possibly crank position sensor..where did you get change cop in 6 from?

P0301 is Cylinder # 1, passenger side nearest the front of the car. The other two codes are prolly related.

You changed #6 COP? As RCM ask's, why? Misprint?

Thanks RCR and Pat for your replies.

Sorry, I neglected to mention that I was getting a P0306 first. That's why I replaced the COP on 6.

I just replaced the crank position sensor (fun, fun, fun!) and now I'm getting P0301 and P0171.

Oh, joy.

If there is a misfire, lose injector connector or injector itself can cause it as well. You should pull your cop, put a long screw driver in it and lay it very close to a bolt, pull your fuel pump fuse and crank the engine over. If it sparks, Cop is good. if you have a misfire and its lean, accompanied by P0171, usually its lack of fuel, meaning injector.
P0175 is usually the code that accompanies a bad COP. Raw fuel, no spark
Someone correct me if I'm wrong please

one of his new codes is lean bank one, might be 02 sensor. no sense in just throwing parts at it. someone with more knowledge may reply.

Swap the #1 coil with another cylinder, preferably on the other bank, clear the codes and see if the miss follows the coil. As mentioned the P0316 just means that the miss-fire was detected shortly after start up so when accompanied by a random or specific cyl miss-fire just ignore it until the main miss-fire code is resolved. Ditto for the lean code, if the cyl doesn't fire it pumps all that unconsumed air into the exhaust causing a lean reading and accompanying code.

I just picked up a 06 F250 at the state auction, it had a CEL and scanning it during the preview revealed P0304, P0300, P0171. Replaced the coil in the parking lot and cleared the codes before driving it home and it ran all the monitors and no codes have returned.

Of course it could be a plug too so in the past I have swapped the plug to one cylinder and the coil to another and watched which one the code followed. However after never seeing it follow the plug I haven't done that in a long time.

Thanks EMAS! I'll swap the COPs this morning and report back.

Swapped the COPs between 5 and 1 and still getting p0301.

Also, the plugs are new - They were changed ~3500 miles ago.

Did you clear the codes and have the code return, if yes, pull the spark plug, is it wet with fuel? If it's dry, check your injector.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have been clearing the codes with each change.

I'll play with it some more this weekend.

Just checking in - What is the best practice for changing a fuel injector?

Thanks again,

Mark

The fuel rail needs to come off in order to replace one.

Ah, yeah.

Got that.

More to the point, what is done to relieve fuel pressure from the rail?

Nevermind.

I had seen some differing methods and was interested in clarification from MM.net.

I found what I needed.

FWIW, I usually just wrap a shop rag around the area of the Schrader valve and loosen it, not that much fuel will come out.

I also threw some Techron in the tank - No more codes!

Thanks everyone!

I can't see anything wrong with that plug...

As soon as I swapped it out, the car ran smoother.

I believe you. Mary's car once had a weird issue I called "sneezing"...it would randomly act just like you shut the key off for a half second, then turned it right back on. Chased a lot of things and no effect. It had Autolite 103 plugs and I decided to change them as they were close to 30,000 miles. None of the Autolite plugs looked like there was anything wrong but I installed NGK TR6s at Marty's suggestion and presto...problem gone.

I'm just glad that I can drive the car again .

That s some pretty bad leakage for a plug with only 3500 miles on it.
