See short video above. Only rattles at cold start ups.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks!
Jason.

After doing some research on this site it sounds like a common problem. I am hoping it is the starter. Sounds to me like it is coming from underneath the car. Almost like there is something in the exhaust clearing out.
Still, any comments are appreciated.

I have the same problem. Only with my car, it only happens randomly when it's cold out. For the first week straight of colder weather it would make the noise. The last few weeks it's been random days it will make it.
What I've been able to gather is it could be any of these: the timing chain tensioners that are worn, oil draining down in the motor, or nothing to worry about. My Marauder has made the noise off and on for almost 3 years.

Doesn't sound like chains and guides
That's one hellofanoise! Have you crawled under it and had someone start it to get a better idea where that noise source is?

On my car, I thought it was the starter so I replaced it a year ago with a oem starter. It still makes the noise.

I've been under the car for two cold starts. On mine it's from the front of the engine.

Not yet. Has seemed to have gotten worse in the last few months. Will have the wife start her up and see If I can figure it out.
Thanks.
Mine made that noise as well only when cold, at first startup of the day.
I determined it was the teeth of the starter hitting the flywheel as it disengaged.
I replaced the original started with a new one it did the same thing again. I pulled that starter out brought it back, got another and it's been fine ever since.

timing chain slapping.
I'm mystified why people post videos of noises without trying to diagnose them first.
Step 1: Put car up on ramps
Step 2: Get under car
Step 3: Have a helper start the engine so you can isolate the noise.
Step 4: Find noise

Starter.
My black does that, exact sound, get your head down near the battery and you can clearly hear it.

It is a small piece of magnet that broke off inside the starter.
I opened mine up, removed the piece that broke off, and reinstalled. I got another five years out of it.

I had that same noise on my car on cold startup, it was the starter that was the problem.

Very glad to see the discussion in this thread. My aviator has a similar noise that the shop diagnosed as bad timing chain guides/tensioners.
The aviator makes a bit more noise and clanking but it very well could be this.
Will put it up on ramps to see if I can isolate the noise around the starter. Hopefully it's the starter bc I didn't like the quote to replace tensioners...

I'm not doubting you, but why is it only on cold starts in cold weather?

Yes, no doubt about it...that noise is the starter Bendix. I see that pretty often with 4.6 starters at work, and you will have to replace the starter to get rid of the noise. It could last for years like that..my Marauder did that a couple years ago, and I had to change the starter. I can't stand noises :shake:

Mine did it when i was low on oil. Had it charged and filled(obviously) and it only did it a couple times, I guess until the oil had a chance to fully circulate. That was a few months ago. Just started again last week... Haven't checked my oil yet, but I know these damn engines suck and burn oil

Mine was pretty much at all times.

Or remove the chipped off piece like I said. The noise is the piece bouncing around inside. Once removed, it is as quiet as new.
It takes less than ten minutes to do and in my case the starter still looked great besides the 1/4" or less corner piece that came off.

Soak the starter bolts with pb blaster a few minutes prior removing. The top bolt sometimes is a pain in the ass to remove.
Also, how many miles on the car? If over 100k you may want to replace the timing chain guides and arms as part of maintenance.

Step one. Maintenance.
I run mine hard and never burned anything.

Maintenance... You mean like REGULAR OIL CHANGES, RADIATOR FLUSHES BEFORE WINTER, OH....... AND THAT HEAD GASKET JOB I HAD A YEAR AGO... PLUS WATER PUMP, TENSION PULLEY, ALTERNATOR, TRANSMISSION REBUILD... YOU MEAN LIKE THAT??? 😂😂😂 You're the FIRST person that's ever said(to me) that you've never heard of these engines burning oil🤔🤔🤔

I'm just kidding around btw with my sarcasm. But this engine has been the worse. That coolant bypass tube rusted. That weird, obsolete metal tube that connects the heater core to the radiator also rusted out. Maybe i just got a bad one...

I only mentioned it because these motors are definitely NOT known for burning oil. Perhaps you did get a lemon, but many of these car have over 150,000 miles with no excessive oil consumption. Mary's car (now SergntMac's) has over 200,000 and uses less than 1 qt/5,000 mile oil change.

My ProCharged motor blew at 256K miles and never used any oil between 5K mile oil changes....10K on new forged motor and no oil consumption!!:bows:
Almost 2 years and only 10K miles?? Hardly ever drive it anymore!!:shake:

OK, so my car burns oil an NO OTHER MARAUDER IN THE WORLD burns oil... Gotcha! But instead of everyone Chiming in trying to prove me wrong(which I've met a dozen MM owners that all said the same thing), can you help the original poster with HIS problem👍

can you help the original poster with HIS problemAt least 4 knowledgeable people have already said it's the starter. Until he either gets under there himself or has a mechanic look at it, there isn't much more we can do.

Sometimes oil leaks can be easily confused with oil consumption. Check around the oil filter base, oil pan and head covers. The rear main seal too. Is your car smoking at all?

After watching the video as everyone said it's the starter. I replaced mine after it started making that noise, the gear was not retracting back fast enough or fully. Installed a new starter from Napa and good to go.
If it was the timing chain/guides it would make the chain slap sound at startup and also make a faint tick/tapping sound at idle once warmed up and oil psi was at it's lowest pressure.

question on the starter issue. when you removed the old starter, did it rattle like there was a broken part inside if shaken?

I had the dealer replace mine while it was in for other services.
