Hello
I have a line on a relatively cheap aviator motor that is out of a interior fire destroyed vehicle. It is a long block that was pulled for a customer that did not end up taking it. Anyway the timing cover is gone so I believe it has been exposed. The owner of the business says it needs "cam tensioners" which I don't know if it is actually cam tensioners or the guides that need to be replaced. I am going to look at it this weekend and he offers a 30 day warranty. Would that be a deal breaker for any of you? With the timing chains exposed? I would look to just swap over everything from my Marauder parts motor and get it rolling. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!

Exposed for how long and I'm assuming it was indoors?

I'm not exactly sure. And if it's outdoors I probably would consider that a no go haha

What's wrong with the orig engine that makes it a part motor, I'd replace the tensioner and guides anyway with the oil pump
Pull the pan, pull the valve covers, look for sludge,

It's seized, oil is orange and cooling passages are heavily corroded. It's a mess. It might still be rebuildable but I'm looking for other options before I have to do that.

What's wrong with your original engine that it can't be rebuilt?

The front cover off might just be a blessing now that you can inspect it better depending on condensation..
If he lets you, I'd also pop the cam covers and inspect that as well. Salvage yard warranties are usually exchange only.

Not entirely sure...I bought it that way from the original owner. He said he let his son have it for a high school car and basically let it him run it into the ground. Parked it in his driveway a few years ago and has been sitting ever since. I picked it up cheap but just as a project to do in my spare time and gain more skill. I've been quoted by my engine builder who I have used before for $2000 for a rebuild. So if I can have replacement from a yard that's significantly cheaper, great. But if the price doesn't outweigh the risk I'll just get it rebuilt. Just looking at alternate options.

its like 20 hours to pull and reinstall the motor ( wires, hoses etc)..whats he charge, $40 an hour? based on what I've seen, $4k is rough base price...maybe I'm wrong, but it was just $400 to touch up paint the underside of my front bumper, not a total repaint.

If the OEM isn't fully locked up you might want to check into getting the OEM steamed and just rebuild it. Sounds like you will be doing most of the same work on the transplant. Wouldn't hurt to check into the costs of cleaning up the OEM.
